Computer Forensics, Evidence Acquisition, Evidence Analysis Hal Pomeranz, Deer Run AssociatesNote that the information in this article has been superseded by a new technique that leverages the EXT4 file system drivers. If your analysis system supports EXT4 (and most Linux distros do at this point), then I recommend looking at this article for more details.Several months ago, I blogged about using alternate superblocks to fake buffer i/o error on device , logical block out the ext3 drivers so you could mount file system images read-only, even if they were needing journal recovery. However, due to recent changes in the ext file system driver the method I describe in my posting is no longer sufficient. Happily, there's a quick work-around.Let's try the solution from the end of my previous posting under a more recent Linux kernel:# mount -o loop,ro,sb=131072 dev_sda2.dd /mntmount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or soThis looks like the original error output we got when using the primary superblock. Looking at the relevant dmesg output we see something different, however:[163135.527484] JBD: Ignoring recovery information on journal[163135.795917] Buffer I/O error on device loop0, logical block 0[163135.795931] lost page write due to I/O error on loop0[163135.795944] Buffer I/O error on device loop0, logical block 1[163135.795949] lost page write due to I/O error on loop0[163135.795958] Buffer I/O error on device loop0, logical block 2[163135.795963] lost page write due to I/O error on loop0[163135.795973] Buffer I/O error on device loop0, logical block 3[16313

Here's image: http://i.imgur.com/JBD5x.jpg Another thing I noticed is that after few about an hour, messages disappear, this error keeps showing up for first hour roughly. gnome-terminal share|improve this question edited Nov 6 '12 at 11:09 asked Nov 6 '12 at 7:46 Paul Dirac 148116 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 11 down vote accepted This is indeed most likely an issue with Ubuntu thinking you have a floppy drive when you do not, and it thinks that because your BIOS is telling it to think that. My BIOS is an Award Software BIOS; I believe Phoenix is the same company. At boot of computer, press DEL to enter BIOS setup (this might be a different key, but your post screen probably will tell you what to hit if it's not DEL.) In the BIOS, find the section that lists different drives (hard drives, floppies, etc).

is internet use, so i download it from another computer and mount it to a usb flash drive like the site says, (netbook remix latest version) then i put it in my laptop and it loads all the way and i press try and after about 10 minutes of loading it lets me try. so that was ok really slow but i thought id install it to hard drive to see if it improved speed. so the next time i start my laptop i get Buffer i/o error on device loop0 logical block xxxxxx so i redo the usbflashdrive no errors switch usb ports and same thing, ive done the switch usb ports and redo the flash drive about 4 times im really getting mad at linux before i even have it installed.
