I/O error, stuck on grey screen Mid 2009 Macbook Pro, Mavericks I've got a serious booting issue going on. The first symptom was my computer not being able to boot past the grey apple logo screen with the spinning gear. The fsck command in http://www.mac-forums.com/showthread.php?t=315714 single user mode apparently came up okay, but verbose mode revealed "disk0s2 I/O error" I was finally able to get it to boot to the recovery partition but multiple things go wrong here. First of all, Disk Utility cannot repair Macintosh HD, and trying to make a back up to an external results in something like "cannot copy, I/O error." Furthermore, I cannot use the reinstall OS X application, because it says I am not connected to the internet, even though the network utility says I am, and I can actually use Safari successfully in the "Get help online" option. Lately, my computer boots to the recovery partition by default, even though disk utility shows that Macintosh HD is mounted. When I go to "copy image" I can even see all of my files (what a tease!) I also recently noticed something in single user mode; when I ran fsck before, it checked "OS X Base Volume." When I get it to check Macintosh HD using fsck_hbn -fy /dev/disk0s2 it comes back with the same "disk0s2 I/O error." Any ideas about what the hell is going on here? It sounds like my hard drive has failed, but if that were th

After several reboots I managed to close most of my applications but the problem presisted. My free disk space is about 11GB. I opened “Spotlight” and saw the file indexing process in progress. After waiting for about half an hour I have decided to turn the indexing off, and did that through terminal. The slow performance persisted and when I opened the “Console”; I am getting PM kernel: disk0s2: I/O error Every second. As per Google search this is an HD problem. But how and why? Among this error I am also getting a bunch of repeating messages: Aug 4 22:37:03 MacBook–Air–2 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.iCloudHelper[4459]): Exited with code: 1 Aug 4 22:37:03 MacBook–Air–2 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.iCloudHelper[4459]): XPC Service could not exec(3). stuck at startup screen - Help #1 My iMac (snow leopard) got stuck and I had to hard reboot it. Now its stuck on the white screen with the grey apple logo. I tried going to safe mode, which it did, then it got stuck with an empty back ground. I left it for more than 20 minutes then I did another hard reboot. Now it won't go to safe mode again, and it still gets stuck on the startup screen. I also don't have the installation disk, and my DVD drive doesn't work Is there anyway that I can fix this? I've tried some of the suggested solutions like Start while holder cmd+option+P+R but nothing. Did my HDD get fried? You can try to get one of those USB drives with OS X on it to do a fix or if there is an Apple store nearby and you think you can deal with it, try that. Also try holding "Option" when starting up to see if it detects your disk. Ive ran into this issue a few times and in my experience it's either an issue with permissions / corrupted files or a failing hard drive. Good luck! sgi02 View Public Profile Find More Posts by sgi02 Myoclonic Jerk Member (06-08-2012, 10:28 PM) Quote #5 I just tried the cmd+S and it gave me an error disk0s2: I/O error . I think my HDD is gone I wanted to try fsck, but I don't think I can even do that - http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1417 Myoclonic Jerk View Public Profile Send a private message to Myoclonic Jerk Find More Posts by Myocloni
