At first I thought it was https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4700518?tstart=0 caused by a faulty hard drive, but now I've replaced it and I still get those errors. These are the steps I have followed beginning from the first time I noticed something was wrong: Laptop hangs with just Google Chrome and Postbox (an e-mail application) I restart the laptop, but it never gets past the screen with the grey apple. Started Apple Hardware Test by holding "D" during startup. This came up with no errors Through Verbose mode, and Disk Utility of the install CD I saw that http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/77117/how-to-pinpoint-cause-of-disk-i-o-errors it had disk I/O errors. I switched the Momentus XT drive for the stock Apple HDD. Installed a fresh copy of Snow Leopard Recovered everything from a Time Machine backup After a day it started giving disk I/O errors again in Console. This makes me think that an app or a setting is causing this as it is unlikely that both the hard drives are corrupted. How can I pinpoint which application is the cause? Below are my system details: MacBook Pro 5,3 2.66 Ghz / 8GB RAM Snow Leopard 10.6.8 First HDD: Seagate Momentus XT 500GB Second HDD: Stock Apple Hitachi 320GB macbook mac hard-drive hardware share|improve this question edited Jan 7 '13 at 15:59 bmike♦ 116k38202444 asked Jan 7 '13 at 15:54 Saaru Lindestøkke 2,03032348 If you are not equipped like a repair shop with ample spares and ability to isolate failures by systematically testing each component in the chain, I would re-seat the cables (or the drive if you are not comfortable getting to the cable interface to the logic board). IO errors are almost always a failing drive so swapping that drive once the error rate (or loss of time or data) outweighs the cost of the time and parts to repair that drive. –bmike♦ Jan 7 '13 at 16:00 1 If it's not the harddrive it can very likely be the the internal SATA cable the drive is connected with. –MacLemon Jan 7 '13 at 23:03 @MacLemon Is there a way to test this with my current setup? I/O error and even a new HD up vote 0 down vote favorite My mac mini from the 2011 refused to boot. Apple logo and loading image forever.. I tried cmd+s: Went through all the steps from the applejack, tried fsck -fy, all semmed pok, Tried cmd+v: It wouldn't fully load, got the error Disk02 I/O error (it was the original 1TB disk with two partitions), So disk0s2 i/o error I thought the HD must be done, so I bought one Samsung SSD HD 120GB Sata 3, Same result. Thing is that I tried with both drives to install again the mac os x vía USB (I don't have a CD drive) and in both cases I came up with the tipical 'you must reboot your computer' error scereen. So With the new HD replacing I did same steps, cmd+s and cmd+v provided same results.... Any thoughts? macos hard-drive boot ssd error share|improve this question asked Apr 10 '14 at 21:14 Toni Michel Caubet 571411 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote First I would try doing the NVRAM reset by restarting and holding down Command-Option-P-R until you hear the startup sound a second time. Then I would try an SMC reset. Mavericks and Mountain Lion can be pretty finicky and even strange when new hardware is installed. I've had to reset the SMC on my system with Mavericks 3 times since I started using Mavericks. In my case, it's Mavericks, not the hardware. It's buggy. The I/O error typically is either a bad drive or cable, so you probably did have a real hardware problem at some point. I'd be inclined to recommend Scannerz (http://scsc-online.com/Scanne
