personal POP mail would sometimes notice that it is trying to send out emails but there aren’t any in the outbox. These are usually ghost messages that have been sent earlier or are too large and stuck in your outbox. Deleting these stuck emails removes them, but there are some traces that are not visible and deleting these can be a pain as you cannot see them in the first place. Messages are being sent, but actually there are none If you are seeing messages being sent out without anything in your outbox, it could be a read receipt or a corrupted email. Removing this email or solving this error is a bit dicey, but not impossible. However, before you attempt the following procedure, you will need to take a backup of your Outlook emails in a safe place. Let’s take you through the entire procedure of safely backing up your emails and rectifying the problem. Step1: Backing up your emails In order to back up your emails, we recommend that you first delete all unwanted and junk emails and later compact the main email storage file. Unlike Outlook Express that stores the Inbox, Outbox, Sent and other folders in individual DBX files, MS Outlook stores all Emails, Contacts, Calendar and everything else you see in a single file in its own .PST format. This file is located deep within the user profile folder for safe keeping. You need to back up this single file to a safe loc

/ How to / How to Delete Stuck Read Receipts Last reviewed on March 3, 2016 —59 Comments Applies to: Outlook 2016, Outlook 2013, Outlook 2010, Outlook 2007 A reader was concerned that Outlook http://www.slipstick.com/how-to-outlook/delete-stuck-read-receipts/ taken over by a virus as it was trying to send out messages from Outbox though the Outbox was empty. It's not a virus, but a stuck read receipt. For some reason, the SMTP https://www.howto-outlook.com/faq/messagestuckinoutbox.htm server won't accept it but Outlook keeps trying to send it. Read receipts are stored as hidden messages in the mailbox and you'll either need to configure Outlook to use a SMTP server outlook 2013 that will accept the receipts or delete them using MFCMAPI. If you are using a Comcast account and messages aren't sending, you need to change your outgoing server to use port 587 or 465 and set Use this following type of encrypted connection to None then click OK.
If you are using an IMAP account and getting NDRs for read receipts, see Outlook is Sending Unknown Messages outbox shows 1 After deleting receipts several times, the user asked how to prevent the problem from reoccurring. To avoid stuck read receipts, you'll need to configure Outlook to stop sending read receipts responses automatically or configure Outlook to always ask what to do. Although it's annoying to be asked if you want to send receipts, you will soon find out who requests receipts. In Outlook 2010 and newer, the setting is in File, Options, Mail (Tracking is near the bottom of the dialog). In Outlook 2007 and older, you'll find the option to disable read receipts in Tools, Options, Preferences, Email options, Tracking Options. Send or delete stuck Read Receipts There are two methods that can be used to get rid of read receipts: Change the SMTP server for the account to a SMTP that can send the receipt. After the read receipt is sent, change the SMTP back to the one you normally use for the account after they are sent. Delete the hidden messages using MFCMAPI. We recommend using MFCMAPI because it does not install a program on your computer; the exe runs without making changes to your computer. You won't have to close and restart restart Outlook towell. Below you'll find 5 methods to get the message out of the Outbox.Method 1 – Open and closeMethod 2 – Offline ModeMethod 3 – Safe ModeMethod 4 – New temporary default pst-fileMethod 5 – MFCMAPIMore informationNote:If you can’t see the stuck message, then it is most likely a Read Receipt. To get rid of that see the guide: Delete a stuck Read Receipt.Method 1 – Open and closeThe easiest and quickest way to try to unlock the message from your Outbox is to open the message in the Outbox with a double click and close it again. Now select the message and press DELETE or move it to your Drafts folder.Method 2 – Offline ModeAnother quick and effective method is to put Outlook in Offline Mode.Outlook 2007 and previousFile-> Work OfflineOutlook 2010, Outlook 2013 and Outlook 2016Ribbon tab: Send/Receive-> button: Work OfflineNow restart Outlook and see if you can delete it. You can try this in combination with method 1 as well. Don't forget to put Outlook back On-line again afterwards via the same instructions as above.Method 3 – Safe ModeBy Starting Outlook in Safe Mode, you’ll prevent the message from being locked by an add-in like for instance a virus scanner which integrates itself with Outlook (which is a good thing to disable anyway). To start Outlook in Safe Mode, hold the CTRL button on your keyboard when clicking on the Outlook shortcut and hold the CTRL button down until you see the dialog below and choose: Yes. You can combine this method with the above 2 methods as well.Holding down the CTRL button while starting Outlook is the easiest way to start Outlook in Safe Mode.Method 4 – New temporary default pst-fileThis method is a bit more drastic but highly effective when the above methods all have failed. Via this method you can also force Outlook to recreate the Outbox folder.Create a new pst-file.Outlook 2007 and previousFile-> New-> Outlook Data File…Outlook 2010, Outlook 2013 and Outlook 2016Ribbon tab: Home-> button: New Items-> More Items-> Outlook Data File…Set this pst-file as the default data file in your Account Settings.Outlook 2007 and previousFile-> Data File Management…Outlook 20010, Outlook 2013 and Outlook 2016File-> Account Settings-> Account Settings-> tab Data FilesWhen you now restart Outlook, your original pst-file will show up as the secondary set of mailbox folders
