Advertisement efas Thread Starter Joined: Jan 2, 2007 Messages: cannot update. database or object is read-only access 2013 2 I'm running Access 2003, trying to export a query to tab-delimited text. It's a process that I'm automating using VBA. I docmd.transfertext acexportdelim can use the TransferSpreadsheet function with no problems, but when I use TransferText I get an error #3027 saying "Cannot update. Database or object is read-only." But it's not a read-only object or database. Here is the offending code: DoCmd.TransferText acExportDelim, "Tessitura Format", "qryTessituraResponseReport", "C:\Program Files\TeleSales\Tessitura Response Report" It fails to work with or without the tab specifications parameter ("Tessitura Format"). The tab specifications parameter refers to a specification that actually exists, by the way. Please help me out. efas, Mar 27, 2007 #1 OBP Trusted Advisor Joined: Mar 8, 2005 Messages: 19,071 Perhaps the file already exists from when you created the Specification, if so try deleting it and then running the VBA. If it wotks you need to write the Deletion in to you VB code. I would like to make the mdb file readonly (otherwise the file https://forums.techguy.org/threads/transfertext-in-access-read-only-error.555490/ just grows and grows as users use it, and some occasional odd locking errors not relating to data but to the access application). Since all the data is in sql, the application should work just fine even if I make the mdb file readonly, and in fact it does work for the most part, except... Part of the application uses DoCmd.TransferText to import various text files into various tables. if the mdb file is readonly I get runtime error 3051 error "The Microsoft Access database engine http://stackoverflow.com/questions/18577379/ms-access-front-end-transfertext-readonly-error cannot open or write to the file ... it is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view and write its data". I can't see any reason for this error, since I am not writing any data to the mdb file itself. (and I also noticed in the 'External Data' ribbon all the 'import' buttons are greyed out). any suggestions? thank you ms-access share|improve this question asked Sep 2 '13 at 16:25 mendel 52968 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote Since all the data is in sql, the application should work just fine even if I make the mdb file readonly Not necessarily. You are using the .mdb file as an application so it may well need to update local temporary tables or other objects in the .mdb file. Furthermore, if you are using an .mdb front end then each user must be given their own local copy of that file, so file bloat is essentially a non-issue and you can just let the users have write access to the local file. share|improve this answer answered Sep 2 '13 at 18:16 Gord Thompson 56.1k74592 a: we have tested the application as readonly and so far the only issue we encountered was the error on DoCmd.TransferText (although it's possible that DoCmd.TransferText internally uses temporary tables). –mendel Sep 2 '13 at 21:34 b: why does 'each user MUST be given their own local copy', why is that a MUST? –mendel Sep 2 '13 a
If I do a DoCmd.TransferText to export from a query and set the export file name http://www.pcreview.co.uk/threads/transfertext-in-xls-causes-error-3027.1667237/ to xxxxx.xls I get "Error 3027, Can't update. Database or object is read only.". The full line of code is: DoCmd.TransferText acExportDelim, "OpenAccountsExportInvoices", "qryOpenAccoun tsExportTable", sPathname, False sPathname is a string variable containing a full pathname including a filename ending in ".xls". If I change this to ".csv" it exports OK. I am running WinXP read only Pro. The error occurs with any version of Access (Access97, 2000 or XP). It does not occur on Win98 or Win2K. Anyone seen this before? I can't find anything in the knowledge base about it.
