The problem seems to be that my HDD is Read-Only so I cant boot and can not erase the HDD to reinstall the system. But here is the whole story. I bougth a used MacBook Pro 13" from Mid 2009. It was used by a friend and he used it until yesterday without any problems. I bought it and he erased the system and then I configurated the system for my http://superuser.com/questions/832748/cant-boot-macbook-pro-hdd-file-system-is-read-only preferences. I booted and everything worked fine. But then this happend: I changed the System-Language in System Preferences -> Language to German and then restarted when restarting the Apple Logo appears and a loading Bar is bottom of this. The Bar needs about 3 minutes to load - and then the MacBook shut down. Thats it. I tried it about 5 times - everytime the same. I googled and used CMD + V at the start to see what happeneing and I saq that the problem is that the system tries to repair the "volume" - my HDD. After the third repeat the system shut downs. So now I tried the following steps to solve this: CMD + R when restarting to go to DiskUtil. In this I tried to scan the HDD. It returns that it should be repaired. I clicked repaired and I got the message that DiskUtils can not repair the HDD. Then I clicked on the HDD and saw that it doesnt seems to be mounted ... I tried to mounted but: "Can not mount this - try to repair and try again .." - but this still doenst work. So I was going on ... CMD + S to get into the console before starting the system. There I tried this: diskutil list. This returned: "Killed 9". Not more and not less. So I googled it: I found this page:
jps2012March 25th, 2012, 05:31 PMI'd like to ask for help with changing permissions on an external drive. In Terminal (bash) I've typed the following command: chmod 777 /media/JPSBackupDrive1 The terminal returns: chmod: https://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1946755.html changing permissions of `/media/JPSBackupDrive1': Read-only file system But I KNOW it's a read-only file system. That's why I'm trying to change it. Does anyone know a way around this problem? The external was first set http://www.kenstone.net/discussions/read.php?3,34517,34544 up for use on a Mac. I'm now using it on an Ubuntu machine (Lucid 10.4). Some of the directories are allowing me full permissions; others are read only. I'm trying to give myself full read only permissions for all directories on the drive (and I'm trying to avoid resetting permissions file by file, because there are are thousands of files--mostly image files--I need to access). Thanks for your help. JPS matt_symesMarch 25th, 2012, 05:32 PMHi Try using sudo. sudo chmod 777 /media/JPSBackupDrive1 Enter your password. It will not be echoed to the screen. Kind regards coffeecatMarch 25th, 2012, 05:45 PMIn case matt-symes suggestion does not help... But read only file I KNOW it's a read-only file system. That's why I'm trying to change it. Does anyone know a way around this problem? To change permissions on a filesystem with chmod, you need it to be mounted read-write. You can't make a read-only fileystem read-write with chmod. You need to change the mount options. However... The external was first set up for use on a Mac. I suspect that the filesystem is the journalled version of HFS+ which can be mounted read-only in Ubuntu. This could be your problem. You need it to be mounted read-write to chmod the directories that are causing you trouble, but you can't mount it read-write. Catch-22. There are ways round this. Just to see if it really is HFS+, post the output of: mount jps2012March 25th, 2012, 05:46 PMI'm wondering if the drive isn't mounted (and I'm also unsure of what "mounted" really means; I see the drive listed in a file browser, and can access some folders and files, but not others). So I tried a command I found on the linux.org forum: mount -t ntfs -o user /dev/hd* /mnt/whateverNote: I replaced "whatever" with the name of my drive. Bash returned the following statement: ntfs-3g 2010.3.6 external FUSE 28 - Third Generation NTFS Dr
have by mistake changed the user rights on Macintoch drive and all folders under (That means the whole machine!!) to read only. Now, I cannot start the MAC in normal way. Therefore I have opened it in Single User Mode (CMD+S) and there it says READ ONLY MODE. I am right now in the Philippines and I have a performance in 3 days ...... Any suggestions what to do so I can start up and use my MACBOOK PRO normal again? Kind regards, Andreas Mortensen Aarhus, Denmark Reply Quote Re: Macintosh HD read only!! (July 17, 2011 09:50PM) David Harbsmeier Are you saying that it won't let you set the permissions on the main hard drive to Read/Write? -DH Reply Quote Re: Macintosh HD read only!! (July 17, 2011 10:32PM) Friskfyr67 Yes that is the issue. I do not know what command to use in Single User Mode to change from Read Only to Read and write. Att. print screen of the single user mode as is now. And even the print says that the drive appear to be ok, it still runs read only! Kind regards, Andreas Mortensen Aarhus, Denmark Reply Quote Re: Macintosh HD read only!! (July 18, 2011 12:25AM) David Harbsmeier If you boot up normally, right-click on the Macintosh HD icon and choose Get Info. When the Info window opens, can you change the user permissions at the bottom of the window? -DH Reply Quote Re: Macintosh HD read only!! (July 18, 2011 12:32AM) Friskfyr67 Problem is I cannot boot up normaly. And since I am not home, I have not my original OSX disk. What only happends is the same, even for hours -the blu/grey screen with the apple logo and the time circle rotating. Nothing else. And what You write was exactly what I by mistake did - changed the permissions at the bottom of the window.....
