For such a small component there's a ridiculous amount of dis-assembly involved to get at real time it. There's a step-by-step guide here for the ThinkPad T41 but your model may differ slightly: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repairing+IBM+ThinkPad+T41+... Note which way up it is (positive side up, or negative side up), remove it, then take it to a battery or PC components shop and buy one that's the same size and voltage. If you have to do this then the RTC (Real Time Clock) aka CMOS battery is bad; it is a CR2032 lithium cell. I tried to replace this in a Compac laptop and it was not worth the trouble. If on restart the date and time is correct, then right click on the 'time' logo on the taskbar (lower right of screen) and make sure that the time is synchronized with Internet Time or some other appropriate standard. Good luck! m 0 l Can't find your answer ? Ask ! Two days ago I did a fresh installation of Red Hat 8.0. When I rebooted the Linux for the first time everything was ok. Then when I ve tried to reboot the PC for the second time above msg appeared. ERROR 0271 Check date and time settings {esc} proceed {f1} enter setup The problem is that from then on keyboard is not responding at all. Before the error msg appears on the monitor, keyboard is responding normally. So if I press F1 before the error msg, I can see the "preparing to run system setup...." but soon after that error msg appears and the whole system hangs. I found on Phoenix web site that I need to enter the bios setup and adjust date and time (obviously!) but I just simply cannot enter the bloody bios setup because sytem hangs. Please help me. Thanks! 22-10-2002,07:28 AM #2 Babe Ruth Guest Re: Bios 0271 Check Date and Time setting Error Redstar, As you say: Error 0271: Check date and time settings means that the real-time clock has reverted to a default date and time, and you need to enter the system setup program (BIOS) and change the date and time back to the correct settings. If the problem continues,
