to be fruitful when looking on the web. I had been using SQL Developer with 2 oracle connections just fine but after I installed the Oracle 11g client, I cannot get SQL Developer to work now no matter what version of the tool and/or JAVA I use. When I go to the connections in SQL Developer it connects but then when I try to run any queries it says "connection closed". I sql developer is very slow know the connections are still functioning and nothing has been changed on the database. I can connect via sql plus and via a linked server in SQL Server. I have tried using different versions of SQL Developer and trying different JDKs. I have tried putting different things in my .conf file and installing the SQL Developer patch. Does anybody have any ideas or experience with why my connections suddenly don't work anymore? It seems like https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/27434721/SQL-Developer-Connection-Closed-on-All-Connections.html a database connection must be reconnected if there is no activity in 30 minutes, it drives me crazy! I can leave Toad for SQL Server connections open for hours without having to reconnect. Are there any settings I can change in SQL Developer to extent the connection time? the supplied JDK running on windows, in work and is rolled out to a large number of PCs. Sometimes we can have 10 users running SQL Developer against our 11.2 Database. But sometimes we can have 100 users using SQL Developer at the same http://www.oralytics.com/2013/11/sql-developer-is-dropping-connections.html time. They have all set up their connections to use the jdbc driver. An error http://www.thatjeffsmith.com/archive/2013/09/oracle-sql-developer-and-the-dreaded-connection-busy-message/ that has been occurring is that it SQL Developer is dropping connections to the database. The users get windows popping up that says "Your Database Connection has been reset. Any pending transactions or session state has been lost." This typically happens when a user clicks to expand one of the objects under their schema in the Connections pane. After searching and searching and a sql developer bit more searching it seem that this is being caused by and Out of Bands (OOB) error in the jdbc driver or on the network. Our DB is set to be dedicated (not shared) so that is not what is causing the issue. So after all my searching, if the following statement is added to the sqldeveloper.conf file then SQL Developer should ignore the OOB errors. AddVMOption -Doracle.net.disableOob=true What is really annoying about this error message is that this config oracle sql developer file change seems to have worked for some users but for other users it has not. They are still getting their connections dropped when using SQL Developer, either while they are using their worksheets or when they click to expand/open a schema object. Our next test is to roll out Oracle Client on the PCs and then get the users to connect to their schemas using the Oracle Client networking and a TNS entry. Will this work? Will this make the error go away? Is there a problem with using the jdbc connection? Is it picking up another jdbc driver on the PC? Is it a bug in SQL Developer? Will using Oracle TNS work? Is it a problem on the Server? Is it a problem with the Database (no errors are being reported)? Lots of questions that need answering. If you can answer some of these then let me know. If/When I find out I will update this blog post. I'm going to try your VMOption and see if that works any better at all.I tried screwing with a keepalive addon, but that didn't really do anything much at all.I sincerely hope that this VMOption works...ReplyDeleteAdd commentLoad more... minding your own business, doing your work, and you click in your favorite Oracle Database IDE. Do you get what you asked for? No! Instead, you are rewarded for your troubles with this puzzling and frustrating message. What the heck?!? Abort? Try again? Busy? The Long Answer When you connect to a database in SQL Developer you are actually making two connections. We use one connection to run background queries in the the worksheet. This makes the code assist features work. The other connection is used to do EVERYTHING else. The only exception is when you open an UNSHARED worksheet. It's called ‘unshared' because we open another dedicated connection just for that worksheet. So, if you see this message in SQL Developer, it means your request has timed out while waiting for the main connection to become available. For example: when you ask to see a table's data in a table editor, we first ask to lock the JDBC connection so we can run our ‘SELECT * FROM…' query. If the JDBC comes back and says, sorry we're busy, we try again. We give up after a certain amount of time and give you the error message. At that point you get to: Try again - ask for the lock to run the query again Abort - give up Now, I realize this explanation has only given you more questions to ask, so let's go through those now. But I'm not doing anything, how could the connection be busy What's probably happening is the columns page query is still technically executing when you go to click on the ‘Data' page in a view or table editor. Or, something you're doing somewhere else in the tool is still using the main connection. Still don't think you're doing anything? Do you have any reports (or Monitor Sessions) on auto-refresh? Or maybe you've gotten cute and installed/created a ‘keep alive' extension to thwart connection-idle disconnects? Oh yeah… In earlier versions of SQL Developer you might run into this error more frequently because of poor session management - that's on us. But in version 4, you should VERY rarely see this message. In fact I've been spending the entire morning trying to get this message to pop-up and I failed. Even if I click ‘Abort' the data comes back anyway?!? The dance of the ‘are you busy' and the ‘yes we are' is colliding with the t
