ResolvingError While Trying To Retrieve Text For Error Ora-12705
ORA-12705: Cannot access NLS data files or invalid environment specified Oracle Database Tips by Burleson Consulting Question: I an getting the error "Resolving ORA-12705: Cannot ora-12705 instant client access NLS data files or invalid environment specified" when I change my NLS_LANG setting. The developers need to experiment with different character sets but when they issue export NLS_LANG and try to start SQLPLUS after that they get the ORA-12705 error.Answer: First, see my notes all about the ORA-12705 error. The ORA-12705 ora 12705 pl sql developer error is indeed controlled by NLS_LANG, and the ORA-12705 commonly happens when Oracle does an automatic "alter session" at login time and discovers an invalid NLS_LANG setting. The Oracle documentation notes are not very helpful: ORA-12705: "invalid or unknown NLS parameter value specified" Cause: There are two possible causes: - An attempt was made to issue an ALTER SESSION statement with an invalid NLS parameter or value. - The NLS_LANG environment variable contains an invalid language, territory, or character set. Action: Check the syntax of the ALTER SESSION command and the NLS parameter, correct the syntax and retry the statement, or specify correct values in the NLS_LANG environment variable. Oracle also says that the ORA-12705 can happen under these conditions and MOSC has resolutions for these ORA-12705 conditions: 1. ORA-12705 with incorrect NLS_LANG parameter 2. ORA-12705 with incorrectly specified ORA_NLSx 3. ORA-12705 from incorrect Oracle install or configuration 4. ORA-12705 when using Specia

The NLS_LANG environment variable contains an invalid language, territory, oracle error ora or character set. Fix: Unset the NLS_LANG environment variable Windows - The NLS_LANG must be unset in the Windows registry (re-named is best). Look for the NLS_LANG subkey in the registry at \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE, and rename it. Linux/UNIX - Here you simply issue the Linux command "unset NLS_LANG" share|improve this answer answered Oct 8 '11 at 23:04 Shawn Bower 1,01611119 add a comment| up vote 3 down vote I have Oracle 10g XE and Windows 7. To set the NLS_LANG environment variable for Oracle databases Determine the NLS_LANG value. In the data warehouse database, run the command SELECT * FROM V$NLS_PARAMETERS Make a note of the NLS_LANG value, which is in the format [NLS_LANGUAGE]_[NLS_TERRITORY].[NLS_CHARACTERSET]. For example: American_America.UTF8 For Windows: Navigate to Control Panel > System
whole lot of information out there, especially in regards to OBIEE.Here's the definition from the docs:Cause:Either an attempt was made to issue an ALTER SESSION command with an invalid NLS parameter or value; or the environment variable(s) NLS_LANG, ORA_NLSxx, or ORACLE_HOME was incorrectly specified, therefore the NLS data files cannot be located.Action:Check the syntax of the ALTER SESSION command and the NLS parameter, correct the syntax and retry the statement, or specify the correct directory path/values in the environment variables. This would occur when trying to import tables into the RPD (OBIEE). First thing that pops up is the Select Data Source screen:Then this beauty would pop up:Ultimately the solution that, sort of worked, was here.Windows - The NLS_LANG must be unset in the Windows registry (re-named is best). Look for the NLS_LANG subkey in the registry at \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE, and rename it.We tried changing it to what I had in my registry: AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8MSWIN1252That didn't work.Tried renaming it as the article suggested, that didn't work. Finally, my colleague (without prompting from me), cleared the key (didn't delete, just blanked it)...and voila! You do know that by unsetting nls_lang you default to the US7ASCII codepage ? And thus, if you import data with an 8bit codepage, you can end up with data loss.Instead of unsetting NLS_LANG, setting ORA_NLS10 to %ORACLE_HOME%/nls/data in the registry might have been a better choice... I did not know that.Admittedly, this post was a terrible way to go about it...just unsetting/setting something without understanding the downstream consequences is not a very good practice. Thanks for the tip Kurt.chet July 1, 2010 at 9:17 AM Anonymous said... If you didn't know that, perhaps you didn't know that using the 7 bit doesn't prevent you from putting in 8 bit data with several tools. Then an exp/imp to the proper bittage loses bits...
