If so, it sometimes helps running with the imp from that release. There was a problem like this between 816 and 817. You can probably get it to work, but if the error message is correct then the characterset conversion between the export file and the database you are importing to are not compatible. You could try setting NLS_LANG to that of the database before the export and see if that solves this problem. 0 Message Author Comment by:rats542003-06-07 This was an export from 9.2.0.3.0 and ftp to another server and then i tried to import. What do I set NLS_LANG to? How do I find out what the setting of NLS_LANG should be? 0 LVL 4 Overall: Level 4 Oracle Database 4 Message Expert Comment by:MathiasMagnusson2003-06-07 I would try american_america.utf8. You did do a binary ftp, so it's not that the file has been "translated" due to an ascii transfer? 0 Message Author Comment by:rats542003-06-07 Yes I ftpd in binary. Now i get following error. brandy% export NLS_LANG=american_america.utf8 brandy%

ora-12705 toad Resolving ORA-12705: Cannot access NLS data files or invalid environment specified Oracle Database Tips by Burleson Consulting Question: I an getting the error https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20640344/Cant-run-import.html "Resolving ORA-12705: Cannot access NLS data files or invalid environment specified" when I change my NLS_LANG setting. The developers need to experiment with different character sets but when they issue export NLS_LANG and try to start SQLPLUS after that they get the ORA-12705 error.Answer: First, see my notes all about http://www.dba-oracle.com/t_ora_12705_resolution.htm the ORA-12705 error. The ORA-12705 error is indeed controlled by NLS_LANG, and the ORA-12705 commonly happens when Oracle does an automatic "alter session" at login time and discovers an invalid NLS_LANG setting. The Oracle documentation notes are not very helpful: ORA-12705: "invalid or unknown NLS parameter value specified" Cause: There are two possible causes: - An attempt was made to issue an ALTER SESSION statement with an invalid NLS parameter or value. - The NLS_LANG environment variable contains an invalid language, territory, or character set. Action: Check the syntax of the ALTER SESSION command and the NLS parameter, correct the syntax and retry the statement, or specify correct values in the NLS_LANG environment variable. Oracle also says that the ORA-12705 can happen under these conditions and MOSC has resolutions for these ORA-12705 conditions: 1. ORA-12705 with incorrect NLS_LANG parameter 2. ORA-12705 with incorrectly specified ORA_NLSx 3.
