be manually restarted From: "Johnson, Matt" int> <51828D00 dot 7030303 at cygwin dot com> client removed the previous script because it was a batch file) to install Cygwin and configure sshd. Everything works fine in the script except for the final command which attempts to start the service and results in the output below. Attached is also the cygcheck output after the installation. ---- Output ---- The CYGWIN sshd service is starting. The CYGWIN sshd service could not be started. A system error has occurred. System error 1067 has occurred. The process terminated unexpectedly. ---- End Output ---- So after the clean install, the service does not start. But I rebooted the machine and the service is running once I get logged in to the machine (ssh-host-config sets the start mode to auto): ---- Output ---- C:\>sc query sshd SERVICE_NAME: sshd TYPE : 10 WIN32_OWN_PROCESS STATE : 4 RUNNING (STOPPABLE, NOT_PAUSABLE, IGNORES_SHUTDOWN) WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0) SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0) CHECKPOINT : 0x0 WAIT_HINT : 0x0 ---- End Output ---- I can connect to the machine remotely using PuTTY. Looking in the Windows Application event log, I see three logged events related to sshd: sshd: PID 1616: `sshd' service started sshd: PID 1952: Server listening on :: port 22. sshd: PID 1952: Server listening on 0.0.0.0 port 22. /var/log/sshd.log is present but empty because log entries are going to the Windows event log. This all looks normal as compared to other working machines. However, if I stop the service and try to start it again, it fails: ---- Output ---- C:\>net stop sshd The CYGWIN sshd service is stopping. The CYGWIN sshd service was stopped successfully. C:\>net start sshd The CYGWIN sshd service is starting. The CYGWIN sshd service could not be started. A system error has occurred. System error 1067 has occurred. The process ter to start as a service From: my xp pro system, I included ssh. Run ssh_host_config, tell it to install sshd, and use privsep. SSH fails to start, giving an error tm1 system error 1067 saying it terminated unexpectedly (windows error) Event Log contains this: The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( sshd ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files https://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/2013-05/msg00059.html to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: sshd : PID 3576 : starting service `sshd' failed: execv: 255, error 255. Additionally, trying to start sshd manually also failed. I have since reconfigured it not to use privsep, and the situation has changed slightly. Attempting to start the service in windows results in Error http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/2004-06/msg00303.html 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly. The following appears in the event log: The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( sshd ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: sshd : PID 3348 : starting service `sshd' failed: execv: 1, Operation not permitted. This would suggest that sshd is perhaps being started as the wrong user? It is being run as Local System. No changes have been made to how it is installed by ssh_host_config . However, I can manually start it using /usr/sbin/sshd.exe from within a shell, and then use ssh to localhost, or from another machine, with no issues at all. This is starting to cause me headaches. (I have similar issues with cygwin nfsd and mountd) All three fail to access log files within /var/log . I would have thought this was to be expected as they were using a cygwin path outside of cygwin? Or am I missing something obvious with this bit? Attached is my cygcheck output.. Any suggestions would be most welcome.. I've come across this a number of times, but always given up... Cheers, Chris Attachment: cygcheck.out Description: Binary data -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubs the services management window, I noticed that the OpenSSHd service was not running. Trying to manually start this service was also unsuccessfull. This is the message I got: "Could not start system error the OpenSSH Server service on Local Computer.
