custom paper sizes, but that is not the case here. The solution is generally failed to open the microsoft xps document writer printer system error number 5 to set the PrinterName to an emtpy string. I fail to understand the meaning of that solution for the end user who needs to be able to select the printer and printer settings required for their job. How do I diagnose and solve this problem? Thank you. # jbell_autoship 4 years, 3 months ago More on this issue. The client has responded saying that this error occurs when he sets the network printer as the default printer, on top of that the error will occur with all printers including local ones. But, if he sets his PDFPrinter, a local one as default, all printers work, even the network one. Any ideas on how to fix this. I cannot reproduce it myself. # 117p Pragati Kaushik117p 4 years, 3 months ago Autoship, Since the issue occurs with a network printer, please make sure that the printer is installed on your client's machine running the report. I would request you to have a look at this Microsoft Link which explains how you can install the network printer locally. The end user may also want to reinstall the printer drivers rather than just use the one that had been copied across the network previously. Please let me know if this helps. Best Regards,Pragati Kaushik # jbell_autoship 4 years, 3 months ago Thanks for the response. I have already asked him to do this, having read the same advice in a previous posting regarding this question. It appears he is not interested in doing this as all of his other programs are working fine with the printer setup the way it is. He may not even have the authority to do this. Do you have any other ideas on why this error occurs and a solution? # jbell_autoship 4 years, 3 months ago I am suspicious about his workaround. i.e. changing the default printer to a local one solves the problem. That sounds to me like an internal problem with ActiveReports. # 8p Rajnish Sinha8p 4 years, 3 months ago printe
Live Demo Pricing Support Blog Documentation System Error Number 5 Tailslide2 9 years, 1 month ago We get this when we try to print across the network using a shared printer. It is a peer to peer workgroup with 2 windows XP machines. The exact same software and report prints OK on the machine the printer is connected to but not the networked machine. Letter size reports seem to work fine it is only custom size reports that fail. We also get the same message when we go into the end user report designer and preview the report. I am able to print a test page from the PC to the shared printer over the network. # 30p SergeyRomanov30p 9 years, 1 month ago Hello , It seems that the user http://arhelp.grapecity.com/groups/topic/falied-to-open-printer-system-error-5/ account doesn't have enough access to the network printer settings or such access is disabled on machine with installed printer. You can print on default paper size, but if you use a custom paper size the report engine can't change the printer setting and therefore throws exception. Sergey Romanov. # Tailslide2 9 years, 1 month ago I did some googling.. apparently you need to add a local print driver before you can use custom paper sizes. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;282474#4 A more proper http://arhelp.grapecity.com/groups/topic/system-error-number-5/ solution might be to add the paper sizes as named sizes to the first machine but that makes the install process .. interesting. # Erichero 9 years ago Thanks, this did the trick for me (the Microsoft link). None of the permission settings helped. # Richard Atkin 7 years, 11 months ago Hi there. The software I am working on includes a report builder based around Active Reports. Our clients are able to create their own reports. Is there a way of avoiding this error when running a report that doesn't involve a large number of users having to add a local print driver just to view a report or preventing custom paper sizes from being used in case a user wants to view the report without a local print driver? I see on the forums for an earlier release setting the Document.Printer.PrinterName = string.Emtpy was mentioned as a solution. Is this still valid in AR3? # IgorI 7 years, 11 months ago Hello, yes, you can use the virtual printer device (PrinterName = "") in ActiveReports for .Net 3.0 to avoid the above problem. Thanks,Igor # BSAHUser5 4 years, 1 month ago I am also having this issue. The application works in iis 6 .net 3, but I needed to move the application to another server with .net 4 iis 7. The printing works fine in test from my local machine just as it always has, but o
