account only takes a few minutes. Join Now We have a NAS device (Promise SmartStor NS4300) that can work with SMB. The issue is that from a Windows 7 system we can't see the shares. Net view nas results in a system error 5, and any attempts to connect says our usernames are wrong. It works fine to connect from windows 2008 and earlier, just not 7 and later. Anyone know of why this would be occurring, and how to resolve it? Reply Subscribe View Best Answer RELATED TOPICS: net view: System error 53 has occurred. Or, the NAS box can't authenticate out of the box with Windows so you have to revert to LM authentication. Treat this as you would older Windows clients (2000) having to connect to a Server 2008 system. This is widespread with the many third party Samba-based NAS boxes out there. 0 Chipotle OP CoryK Jun 8, 2010 at 9:52 UTC DCM_SATV wrote: Either one of two things: SMB signing--turn it off. How do I turn SMB signing off? Also, I can connect to our windows 2000 clients (what few there are) without an issue. How do I revert to LM authentication? 0 Chipotle OP CoryK Jun 8, 2010 at 10:05 UTC Woohoo that did it! I just went into Local Group Policy Editor and changed Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options > Network security: LAN Manager authentication level to Send LM & NTLM responses! 0 Chipotle OP DCM_SATV Jun 8, 2010 at 10:16 UTC These settings are controlled through Group Policy (start/run GPMC.MSC). Create a new GPO object in your domain and call it "NAS Access" or something else meaningful. In a workgroup, on a Windows 7 Professional, find "Local Policy" from the start orb. For SMB Signing: Computer Configuration/Policies/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies/Security Options Microsoft Network Client/Digitally Sign Communications (if server agrees): Enabled Microsoft Network Server/Digitally Sign Communications (always): Disabled Microsoft Network Server/Digitally Sign Communications (if client agrees): Enabled For LM authenti
