I am getting 'The remote computer disconnected the session change the terminal server licensing mode from per device to per user because of an error in the licensing protocol' I have performed all the 'fixes' I have been able to find including the removal of the HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\MSLicensing key without any resolution. I restarted the computer after removing the key and it would not recreate the key after trying to connect the first time as it should. I was able to connect using a method

of running IE as an administrator, and the key was recreated, but it would not work again when trying to run it as a normal user. This is not a solution for our users since they cannot run it under admin credentials nor will it run from a shortcut. In order for this to work you must run IE as an admin each time you want to use the connection. I have already spent over 8 hours trying to resolve this and read every post on several forums regarding this issue. I was able to get our WinXP and Vista (32BIT)users fixed, but cannot get this to work on the Windows 7 (32 or 64) machines. If anyone has a real solution to this please let me know. If the issue persists, please open IE, click Tools->Manage Add-ons. Disable all add-ons that are from your security programs. If the issue still occurs, follow the steps below to reset IE sett

If you try the same thing on Windows Vista or Windows 7, when you try to reconnect to the server you get this message: The remote computer disconnected the session because of an error in the licensing protocol. Please try connecting to the remote computer again or contact your server administrator. http://superuser.com/questions/422455/how-to-reset-rdc-client-license-on-windows-7 and the MSLicensing key does not reappear in the registry. What causes this and how to avoid it? windows-7 windows-vista remote-desktop terminal-services share|improve this question asked May 9 '12 at 14:54 just.another.programmer 3802719 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote accepted The problem is caused by UAC in Windows 7 / Windows Vista. Because the RDC client does not by default have permission to create a new key under the HKLM\Software\Microsoft branch, it cannot rebuild the licensing information once it has been deleted! This causes a silent failure with the error message "problem in licensing protocol". (Ideally, the program would be redesigned to display a UAC challenge prompt in this situation). To fix it, just run the RDC as administrator when you first reconnect to the target computer. This will allow the RDC client permission to rebuild the necessary registry keys. You should only need to do this once. share|improve this answer answered May 9 '12 at 19:27 just.another.programmer 3802719 add a comment| up vote 0 down vote This problem made by some kind of caching of remote desktop licensing in clients you can solve this by remove the bellow key in registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSLicensing It's much convenient to make a reg file and run it so . Make a empty text file Name it "mypatch.reg" or "mypatch.reg" Put bellow text in it and save it Windows

The remote desktop on his Windows XP (Related Post : If you have MSLicensing Problem on Windows Vista, then check this post.) was running fine, but now he was getting this error: "The remote computer disconnected the session because of an error in the licensing protocol. Please try connecting to the remote computer again or contact your server administrator." When I looked up in the knowledge base, this is what Microsoft had to say : "Cause: The licensing protocol handles the communication of licensing information between your computer and the remote computer. If there is an error in the licensing protocol, your computer cannot be connected to the remote computer. Solution: Try connecting to the remote computer again. If you continue to receive this error message, contact the server administrator" Well here's the solution to fix this problem: This actually is a registry fix. 1 On the client, delete the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSLicensing key 2 On the client, run "Remote Desktop Connection" as administrator (just one time) From then on, it can be run as usual 1 Comment Pimiento nathanjackson Mar 23, 2015 at 01:44am I had this error on a new Windows 8.1 Pro workstation connecting to a pool of Windows 2012 R2 servers via RD Web access. This resolved the issue for me with the only difference being that I had to run RD Web access from an Internet Explorer window with elevated privileges instead of using the Remote Desktop Connection software.
