The disk is offline." that occurs when using Windows Explorer to safely stop a USB drive. This is with Backup Exec 2012 SP1. I have tried the following approaches to tell Backup Exec that the drive is going to go offline, with the hope it will not then raise an alert. try 1: pause all disk storage devices with a name matching the specified search string powershell.exe -command "&{Import-Module bemcli; Get-BEDiskStorageDevice | Where-Object {$_.Name -like 'Backup Drive*'} | Set-BEDiskStorageDevice -Paused $true}" try 2: powershell.exe -command "&{Import-Module bemcli; Get-BEDiskStorageDevice | Where-Object {$_.Name -like 'Backup Drive*'} | Set-BEDiskStorageDevice -Disabled $true}" Both commands act as expected in terms of pausing or disabling USB disk storage devices. However, the alert still gets raised when the drive is later stopped. If anyone has found a way to eject a USB drive without getting a Backup Exec alert raised, sharing that would be appreciated. Each day the current drive is removed https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/564047-backup-exec-2014-media-error-the-disk-is-offline and a new one is inserted (from a pool of 5). Each day a random or couple of random usb drives that are not connected to the server generate the 'offline' error in http://kb.eventtracker.com/evtpass/evtpages/EventId_58057_BackupExec_47460.asp BE. Doesn't seem to have any effect on the actual running of things - if the drives are plugged in then they work just fine - its just generating huge numbers of alerts. The backup exec problem of generating seemingly false alerts like this is that I cant use this fault condition to notify local users that a real fault exists. If the devices are not connected they must alert you, why you want a change? 0 Poblano OP Moopere Aug 19, 2014 at 5:35 UTC Heh :) Yes it might seem that way. However, I believe that Backupexec does make a distinction between removable storage and fixed storage - at least the wording used in the various wizards lead me to believe that this subtlety is recognised. Alerting the backup administrator that a currently not connected removable USB disk is indeed not connected is about as useful as alerting that currently offline tapes are not inserted in the tape drive ... ie; not useful and simply numbs notification recipients to all alert emails coming from the backup system 0 Jalapeno OP techyogi Aug 19, 2014 at 5:51 UTC They are useful for a wider group of users. In my case, many a times the external USB drive cables are loose which may case backup to fail and the alert pre-notifies me. You may go ahead and give them a suggestion for some "Intelligent Alerting" system. They have indeed a done a great job by moving from 2012 to 2014 and wil
