Close Sign In Print Article Products Related Articles Article Languages Subscribe to this Article Manage your Subscriptions Problem The Continuous Protection Agent service fails to start with the "Service-specific error 8201" and "CPS Agent initialization failed: Unable to access journal directory S:\CPS\Journals\Outbound" when the drive that the journals directory resides on has been removed.  Error Message "The Continuous Protection Agent service terminated with service-specific error 8201" and "CPS Agent initialization failed: Unable to access journal directory S:\CPS\Journals\Outbound" After removing the drive (X:\) where the CPS Journals were stored, the Backup Exec Continuous Protection service and the Backup Exec Continuous Protection Broker service would fail to start with the following:  The Application Event log will show the following error : Event ID: 1030Source: Backup Exec CPS AgentDescription: Continuous Protection Agent service initialization failed.CPS Agent Initialization failed. : Unable to access journal directory X:\CPS\Journals\Outbound. The System Event log will show:Event ID: 7024Source: Service Control ManagerDescription: The Continuous Protection Agent service terminated with service-specific error 8201. Solution Change the following registry key to reflect the new location of the Journals directory:  1.  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SYMANTEC\Backup Exec CPS\JournalRoot\ Warning: Inco

Solution The above error occurs while attempting to start the Continuous Protection Agent services after the installation.  The System log reports the following error: Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7024 Description: The Backup Exec Continuous Protection Agent service terminated with service-specific error 8201  The Application log at the same time reports: Event Type: Error Event Source: Backup Exec CPS Agent Event Category: None Event ID: 1030 Description: CPS Protection Agent initialization failed. : Cannot communicate with the filter drivers - (NT error The system cannot find the file specified.).  Cause: The Continuous Protection Agent service fails to start because server has not been rebooted since the install.  Resolution: To solve the issue, reboot the server.  If the issue persists: 1. Uninstall the agent and reboot the server. 2. Reinstall the agent locally instead of using the Push Install option. 3. Reboot the server once again. The services should now start fine.   If the issue is on the Management server,  1. Stop all CPSÂ
