Solved Symantec Backup-Exec media issues Posted on 2010-10-11 Storage Software 1 Verified Solution 7 Comments 2,538 Views Last Modified: 2013-12-01 Ok so I've been having backup exec issues with my Backup Exec media server now for a couple weeks. Background info, Windows 2003 R2 running Backup Exec 12 SP4. I have an eSATA HP 18 slot library with 3 slot partitions. 1-4 daily M-T tapes, 5-6 weekly tapes for Friday, 7-8 cleaning tapes. I also about a month ago attached an iSCSI NAS and the Monday thru Thursday jobs are On Hold being backup exec error replaced by new jobs using the NAS as the storage media. The Weekly job still uses the tapes in slots 5 and 6. However that's the problem, it all started with an e00084ec error stating the heads were dirty. Ok well I had expired cleaning tapes and didn't know it. Then while awaiting new cleaning tapers media labels started disappearing.. from the weekly tapes, the daily tapes and the cleaning tapes. Running a scan, an inventory usually results in an "unknown media" tag on each tape slot. Importing media however has about a 50% success rate, sometimes it repopulate the slot information correctly. Other times it results in the unknown media tag like the scan and inventory does. Right now for example I had inserted two brand new cleaning tapes, I ran a scan and an inventory and those two tape slots still show an Allocated Date of back in 2009. I ran an Import media and both slots pulled in updated information with todays date. I then ran a cleaning job on the drive. Once complete slot 5 reverted back to the 2009 date. Another Import Media job on that slot and
