Cause This error can be caused by various problems with the Backup Exec database including issues with the database itself, SQL permission issues, or Backup Exec configuration problems. Some of the possible causes and their solutions are mentioned below. Solution 1. The Server Name or Domain Name have been changed since installing Backup Exec. Solution: Update the Domain and Server name with BEUtility: www.symantec.com/docs/TECH38988 2. The SQL Instance for Backup Exec database (BEDB) is not running. Solution: Go to Start > Run Type SERVICES.MSC and click OK Start the service for the SQL instance where the BEDB is attached. Error Message The Backup Exec Device and Media Service reports the following error: "The Backup Exec Device and Media Service could not start because the database recovery has failed. Refer to the database recovery log for details." This could occur due to insufficient permissions for BESA. Case B: This can also happen if the name of the media server has been changed, and the BEDatabase still points to old server name. Solution Case A: Ensure that BESA has sufficient permission to connect to SQL instance: Verify that the logon account used has administrator rights to the Windows server that the SQL instance is installed on.
