I have an Windows XP machine with Backup Exec 2010, which connects through a local area network to a Server 2003 (R2) machine

which holds the physical removable media, and the Backup Exec Remote Agent package. Up until recently, and for reasons I can't explain, the Backup Exec 2010 no longer connects to the Media Server on the Server 2003 machine anymore, claiming that the Backup Exec services have stopped. I check the services.msc on the Server 2003 machine, and indeed the Backup Exec Server service is stopped and the services that have this as a dependency (Backup Exec Agent Browser & Backup Exec Job Engine) are also stopped. When trying to start the Backup Exec Server service, I get the following message: "The Backup Exec Server service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service." Is this by design? I've never noticed this occur before, and it's stopping the Windows XP Backup Exec 2010 client from connecting to the Media Server on the Server 2003 machine as the other services need to run off it. I have tried a machine reboot, I have tried repairing the Remote Agent install on the Server 2003 machine, I have also reinstalled from fresh, but the problem persists. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Solved! Go to Solution. Labels: 2010 Backing Up Backup and Recovery Backup Exe

Everything was fine until a couple of weeks ago. Suddenly all the related services, except the Remote Agent, are stopping at random times. There are no pending Windows backup exec updates and absolutely no relative information in the Windows event logs. The services re-start fine when I discover they are are down but it is close to impossible to get a backup because the services WILL go down at some point. Most of my Googleing points to pending SQL or Windows updates but that doesn't seem to be my situation. HELP. Reply Subscribe RELATED TOPICS: backup exec server Backup Exec Policies Help! Solved Symantec Backup Exec, services keep stopping Posted on 2009-10-19 MS SQL Server Storage Software 1 Verified Solution 1 Comment 1,869 Views Last Modified: 2012-05-08 I recently noticed that services had stopped on Backup Exec, meaning that backups weren't being run. I can use BEXEC to manually restart the services, which works fine but obviously this isn't ideal! I waiting for it to happen again to see if it logs anything, but there is already one entry (but BEXEC is still working, at present): An error occurred while attempting to log in to the following server: "JMR0002". SQL error number: "0011". SQL error message: "[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied. This seems tho have happened since last weeks mega 'Super Tuesday', and there is still one update which wont install: Secirty update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (KB970892). When I use Win update to install it, my Backup Exec fails (SQL gets stopped for the update procedure?) with the error: Communications are down with the Backup Exec Services (I would expect this a service is interrupted during install). Check to see if Backup Exec Services are running on MYSERVER. Then I get a message from Winupdate saying installation failed. This error (above) is the same thing that happens overnight.
