These backups are consitent in that they backup successfully up until the following point of failure: After approximately one month of usage, I noticed that one of the incremental tapes had become 'Not Appendable (End marker unreadable)' Checking through the forums lead me to investigate further and work through the following: check backup exec job engine service (bengine.exe) around time media failed (couldn't locate any instances of the service state starting / stopping that could have caused this) run live update (SP2 Installed) check memory errors check scsi controller drivers to address soft write errors (also run the cleaning tape job) check windows update firmware on tapedrive symantec tape drivers up to date run long erase on tape (approximately 7 hours / long erase) Since everything was up to date and none of the windows logs coincided with the last backup run before the errors, I decided to perform the suggestion of duplicating the data to disk and re-duplicating it back to tape after running a long erase. I was able to duplicate the unappendable tape contents to the disk, but after running the follow

I'm in a bad situation at the moment (aren't we https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/533579-symantec-backup-exec-not-appendable-end-marker-unreadable all?) :(We're currently using Dell PowerVault TL2000 with Symantec Backup Exec 2014.First, the https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/23612287/Backup-job-fails-with-End-marker-unreadable.html 2nd tape drive was broken during weekend and it automatically brought the entire library offlinefortunately a quick power cycle and firmware upgrade fix this; backup continues on Mondayearly this morning (Tuesday), I was notified that it needs an extra tape for the backup ... and this is where my problem startsthe backup backup exec job that runs during weekend, which stopped half-way due to the hardware failure, screw up one of the tapes allocated to it:it has about 1.5TB free but it says Not appendable (End marker unreadable) !!!this is either due to a bad tape or the 2nd drive issue I mentioned above, more info on symantec site. Now the question is ... what should I do to end marker unreadable finish the backup job?is it safe to take out the problematic tape and put in a new one? Really appreciate any advice. The only way I get around it is to cancel the job, and format the tape set & throw it back into scratch media. You then need to run the job again.Yes, it is a complete PITA and one reason why I am moving away from Backup Exec at client sites. 0 Jalapeno OP Andrew2683 Jul 8, 2014 at 1:38 UTC well, instead of format the entire set, I can just do a "long erase" of that specific tape only. so replacing that bad tape with a new one doesn't work huh? 0 Jalapeno OP psionic131 Jul 8, 2014 at 2:42 UTC Like Andrew said, its re

Posted on 2008-07-31 Storage Software Windows Server 2003 1 Verified Solution 3 Comments 5,310 Views Last Modified: 2013-12-01 I have a PowerVault 114T with a Ultrium 3 LTO tape drive in it. Every few weeks the backup job will hang and the only error I can find is END MARKER UNREADABLE in the "Append until". Yes, all the settings for the library are correct. It works most weeks. The tape still has a lot of room left also. I change the tape every week, cleaned the drive, changed the SCSI cable. I have not changed the SCSI card out yet which I read someone else that it fixed it. I tried to upgrade the firmware on the tape drive but can not find it. The one I thought it was, was not the right one. Does anyone know what causes this error and where I can get the firmware upgrade for this drive (I can't find it on dell). Last resort will be to replace the SCSI card. 0 Question by:realslimshaddy Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google LVL 23 Active today Best Solution byIamthecreator This happens when the job engine or the beremote service terminates before backup exec is able to write the END MARKER which is written at the very end of the backup job.The only option now to use the Go to Solution 3 Comments LVL 23 Overall: Level 23 Storage Software 20 Windows Server 2003 6 Message Active today Accepted Solution by:Iamthecreator2008-08-01 This happens when the job engine or the beremote service terminates before backup exec is able to write the END MARKER which is written at the very end of the backup job.The only option now to use the
