Since sftp works over ssh, the user needs to have shell access. If in your etc/passwd file the entry for the user with sftp access should have its last field

I can't recall having done anything to the server leading it to start closing the connection. Is the host running a SFTP server? I can SSH connect to the server no problem using PuTTY.
