I followed the instructions from the gentoo Linux Nvidia guide, and have run emerge nvidia-glx and emerge nvidia-kernel both finish without error. However, when trying modprobe nvidia it returns (/lib/modules/2.6.16-gentoo-r12/video/nvidia.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg), and the module fails to load. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated. Which driver version are you using? My bet is that you are trying to use the stable drivers. Unmask the new ones and use those. That should solve your problem unless you have an older card, and then you will need to unmask the legacy drivers and use those. Not saying there should be acapital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take thesafety labels off of error inserting nvidia everything and let the problem solve itself? bigbob 2004-10-27 17:34:07 UTC PermalinkRaw Message Post by Sybren StuvelPost by bigbobFATAL: Error inserting nvidia(/lib/modules/2.6.9-gentoo-r1/video/nvidia.ko): Unknown symbol inmodule, or unknown parameter (see dmesg).See dmesg, tell us the unknown symbol or parameter.Post by bigbobIv'e done this on several previous kernels with no problem. Fixed the problem for me. It would probably bebetter to patch the nvidia kernel glue code instead, but I can't do that.--* Andreas Klauer | ~'' L@@k at Nerd Boy!* Menaures (a) UNItopia | >> .\\. http://www.Nerd-Boy.

I am not using the xorg.conf file and hal is not in my USE variable in make.conf. The /var/log/genkernel.log file doesn't appear to have anything unusually in it. I've done a number of Gentoo installs over the past five years and found that if you follow the instructions everything works. That's not the case this time. I suspect there's something missing from the install documentation that is new whether it's an explanation or kernel setting . . . One thing that should be mentioned is to make sure python 2.6 is eselect'ed. When I run Xorg -configure, it produces an xorg.conf.new file but I get the following also. I've tried using nvidia in VIDEO_CARDS also, but it still doesn't work. # Xorg -configure X.Org X Server 1.9.2 Release Date: 2010-10-30 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.36-gentoo-r5 x86_64 Gentoo Curre
