Error Inserting Snd_seq_oss
I read (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure) that I should upgrade from alsa-1.0.23 to alsa-1.0.24. In that procedure they reference Upgrade Alsa (1.0.23) on Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 (http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2010/05/02/upgrade-alsa-1-0-23-on-ubuntu-lucid-lynx-10-04/) as a template to use for the upgrade. This template only references alsa-driver, asla-lib and alsa-utils. Whereas, the SoundTroubleshootingProcedure calls for upgrading alsa-tools and alsa-firmware in addition to the three above. I attempted to compiled and installed all 5 (in order of driver, lib, utils, tools and firmware) using the following commands: sudo ./configure sudo make sudo make install Only the alsa-tools seemed to have problems - there was no configure script. Now, I don't have any sound at all! Also, the volume control manger is no longer loading - at least I don't see it in the upper right hand corner like I used to. I typed the command: cat /proc/asound/version expecting to see version 1.0.24 instead of 1.0.23 (which was installed previously) but it failed. Turns out there is no directory named asound. I then went directly alsa-project.org, found my sound module "intel8x0" and followed the instructions for installation: 1) Made sure I didn't have to recompile my kernal typed command "modinfo soundcore" jesse@jesse-Ubuntu:/usr/src/alsa/alsa-driver-1.0.24$ modinfo soundcore filename: /lib/modules/2.6.35-25-generic/kernel/sound/soundcore.ko license: GPL author: Alan Cox description: Core sound module srcversion: EF16BDAFD00EF5D7A386369 depends: vermagic: 2.6.35-25-generic SMP mod_unload modversions jesse@jesse-Ubuntu:/usr/src/alsa/alsa-driver-1.0.24$ 2) Downloaded alsa source wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.24.tar.bz2 wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/lib/alsa-lib-1.0.24.1.tar.bz2 wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/utils/alsa-utils-1.0.24.2.tar.bz2 wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/tools/alsa-tools-1.0.24.1.tar.bz2 wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/firmware/alsa-firmware-1.0.24.1.tar.bz2 3) Created appropriate directories and tar'd each of the 5 sources above in the respective directories 4

to go about inserting modules into my kernel. In the installation instructions, I am told : Now insert the modules into http://forums.fedoraforum.org/archive/index.php/t-25628.html the kernel. modprobe snd-audigyls;modprobe snd-pcm-oss;modprobe snd-mixer-oss;modprobe snd-seq-oss I'm sort of lost as to how I would do this. Any/all help is greatly appreciated :) tashirosgt27th October 2004, 10:52 PMOpen a terminal http://www.overclockers.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-423650.html ( redhat, system tools, terminal). Oetzi28th October 2004, 12:34 PMThere should be some more information about this in /var/log/dmesg (-> "see dmesg"). Maybe this modules require parameters to be inserted properly (only an assumption). tashirosgt28th October 2004, 08:27 PMThe commands you are running that are separated by a semicolon can be run one at a time. It might be easier to tell what the first fatal error is if you do it this way. aje28th October 2004, 11:02 PMI did the commands separately. The first
and my sound driver as a module, then using alsaconf finalize it. But I've installed Quake4 and Doom3 and they both have sound problems (yeah it could be problems with the game, but I've had them both working fine in a past installation) ... but music, videos, and UT2004 all work fine. I decided I could not compile the driver in the kernel (and just compile sound support)...then emerge alsa-drivers. I did that with versions 1.0.9 and 1.0.10, but when I try to start alsa I get this error: # /etc/init.d/alsasound start * Loading ALSA modules ... * Loading: snd-card-0 ...
