error several times, and the following steps have always resolved it. Steps (5 total) 1 Boot from the installation cd Put the Windows set up disk in the cd drive, then shutdown the offending machine (Make sure the computer is set to boot from the CD first) Restart the computer and 2 when prompted, choose R for recovery console 3 When you see the C:\ prompt, run the following c:\fixboot followed by c:\fixmbr 4 When those have completed, run Chkdsk /p /r 5 To finish, reboot. Hopefully the nasty error will have gone away. When the computer has started, run the defrag utility in analyse mode, and check for pagefile fragmentation. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/311724 If the pagefile is in more than 2 pieces, try running PAGEDEFRAG to put it back together again. 0 Comments Read these next... There were no files in the Windows/INF directory and although the computer would boot installing new hardware or updating the system was impossible. During my investigation, I used a Windows XP installation CD to boot to the recovery console. At the normal prompt I typed "dir" (without the quotes) and pressed Enter to show a directory listing. I was presented with an ominous message stating: "an error occurred during directory enumeration" and the computer was unable to show a directory listing. It appeared that the information was lost on the hard drive. Follow the information below to see how to possibly recover from this dreaded situation. Booting into the Recovery ConsoleYou'll need your Windows XP installation CD or have access to it through your boot menu.
