Xp Will No Longer Boot - Recovery Console Tried Started by p23185 , Dec 22 2010 10:41 PM Please log in to reply 6 replies to this topic #1 p23185 p23185 TEG Forum Member Members 103 posts Posted 22 December 2010 - 10:41 PM I have a Win XP Home SP3 with all updates running on a dell 8200 desktop that has been working just fine forever. After a java update I rebooted and I cannot get past the black screen where is asks which windows mode I want - Safe mode, with networking, with command, restore last good config, or start win normally. Whichever option I pick it just cycles back.Reading a lot of articles, I have been directed to try and run chkdsk from the recovery console with the orig Win CD in place and booted up to that. When I do this, and get to the c: prompt, it never shows c:\WINDOWS, just C:, nor am I asked for the admin password as all articles say. From there I have tried to do a c:\dir, and get the error "an error occurred during directory enumeration" . I tried the chkdsk and here is where I think I got this error - "the volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems" I tired the bootcfg in recovery console and scan and list will not work. Get message that without scan you cannot use add or rebuild (I think- should have taken pics). This HD only has one partition 320Gb. I removed the HD and installed in a portable enclosre and took to another PC. I can access the HD and view all the folders and files. I can get the properties to read 42Gb is used of the 320Gb, about where it was the last time I looked. I scanned the drive for virus and found none.(1) If I have access to the HD from another PC what should I look for that would prevent it from getting past the black windows boot screen when it is installed in it's own hardware? This MS article talks about changing a whole bunch of registry entries, but am nervous about attempting this. Where does the start up get its information about what Windows mode to choose? Seems like that file is missing or corrupted.(2) Also is there anything else I can do to get the recovery console to work and point to the c:\WINDOWS prompt rather than just C:\? 0 Back to top #2 p23185 p23185 TEG Forum Member Members 103 posts Posted
