Here is the error Visual Studio reported when I tried to publish my ASP.NET web site: The type 'TYPE' exists in both 'c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\...\App_Web_1z57x8dg.dll' and 'c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\...\App_Web_ofaxwney.dll' You won't get this error unless you try to precompile your site (Publish Web Site). You will, however, get a warning when you simply

build your site and run it locally--but you may have missed or ignored the warning. I had two of these errors, and each one was different. The first error came from the fact that I had copied and pasted a web user control to create a new one. I do this a lot, but on this particular file I failed to update the appropriate directive attributes in the .ascx file and the name of the class in the .ascx.cs/vb file. Everything has to match. If you're getting this error, review all of the directive attributes and code-behind class names in your web user controls and web forms. The second error came from the fact that I named my master page "Default.master". Visual Studio generated a code-behind class named "_Default", which of course conflicted with the code-behind class for "Default.aspx". Give your master files a unique name. This doc will provide an overview of the changes and instructions on how to customize the publish process. Unless stated otherwise, the instructions in this article are for publishing from Visual Studio. For an overview of how to publish a web app on ASP.NET Core see Publishing and Deployment. In ASP.NET when you publish a Visual Studio web project MSBuild is https://docs.asp.net/en/latest/publishing/web-publishing-vs.html used to drive the entire process. The project file (.csproj or .vbproj) is used to gather the files that need to be published as well as perform any updates during publish (for example updating web.config). The project file contains the full list of files as well as their type. That information is used to determine the files to publish. The logic was implemented in an MSBuild .targets file. During the publish process MSBuild will call Web Deploy (msdeploy.exe) to transfer the files to the final location. To customize the publish process you would need to update the publish profile, or project file, with custom MSBuild elements. In ASP.NET Core the publish process has been simplified, we no longer store a reference to files that the project contains. All files are included in the project by default (files can be excluded from the project or from publish by updating project.json). When you publish an ASP.NET Core project from Visual Studio the following happens: A publish profile is created at Properties\PublishProfiles\profilename.pubxml. The publish profile is an MSBuild file. A PowerShell script is created at Properties\PublishProfiles\profilename.ps1. dotnet publish is called to gather the files to publish to a temporary folder.
