But yesterday I was able to connect to the database, what happened? Can you check whether you can connect the database server using SQL Server Management Studio? If you could, please refer to the article http://office.microsoft.com/en-in/sharepoint-designer-help/add-a-database-as-a-data-source-HA010100908.aspx and add new database source again to check effect. Hope this helps Thanks! Stanfford Wednesday, July 14, 2010 7:45 AM Reply | Quote 0 Sign in to vote Hello, and thanks for your reply. I am able to connect using SQL Server Management Studio. But following the steps from this article: http://office.microsoft.com/en-in/sharepoint-designer-help/add-a-database-as-a-data-source-HA010100908.aspx is not helping, as I still get the error: an error occurred while retrieving the list of databases fromXXXX the data retrival service .encountered an error during connection to the data source; as I was trying to coonect to a sql database from sharepoint designer 2007. What should I do??? Thanks Thursday, July 15, 2010 11:27 AM Reply | Quot

I tend to create a “Data View” and try to connect to a database server using “Connect https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/c98768b7-c287-4f01-b0eb-75a4fbb22188/an-error-occurred-while-retrieving-the-list-of-databases-from-xxxxxx?forum=sharepointcustomizationlegacy to a database…” option which is available under “Database Connections” section under “Data Source Library” tab. In dialogue box that appears, I type in the server name and my user name together with my password for authentication, then I click Next which is giving me an error saying: Server error: An error occurred while retrieving the list of databases from xxx: an authentication error occurred. Your logon information may be http://forums.asp.net/t/1090450.aspx?SharePoint+designer+denies+to+connect+to+database+server incorrectly entered, you may not have permission to access this data source, or the requested authentication method may not be supported. The connection string was not right. In fact the provider was incorrect. I manage to connect it but unfortunately, after doing the connection, I am unable to execute a simple select query in the "Data View" as the sharepoint designer saying "You can't use this query with this kind of web part". I have no idea why. Do you have any idea?
