Can't get into safe mode either. Is the hard drive dead? Is the boot sector damaged? Is the data on the disk recoverable? It's a Toshiba satellite c655. No disks came with this laptop so what now? Can I use any https://hardforum.com/threads/disk-read-error-has-occurred-press-ctr-alt-del-to-restart.1722249/ Windows XP disk to repair? Can you access the advanced boot menu if you press F8 after you have started the notebook? Then you could start the Toshiba HDD recovery option (select “repair my computer”). If you can’t access the advanced boot menu you have to reinstall Windows Vista. Therefore you can use the Toshiba recovery disk if you boot from it.
