is the issue. This application is running fine on machines with 6gb or less. I am trying to reserve 3GB of space using -Xmx3G under "VM Arguments" in Run Configurations in Eclipse. Every time I try to reserve more than 1500mb, I get this error: “Error occurred during initialization of VM; Could not reserve enough space for object heap” using -Xmx3G What is going on here? java eclipse jvm jvm-arguments share|improve this question asked Feb 16 '12 at 0:37 user1212731 266133 2 error occurred during initialization of vm eclipse What version of java do you have? What operating system are you running on? –Adam Rofer Feb 16 '12 at 2:07 This was Win7, and I had 3 different Java versions installed. One of those was the 32-bit JRE that Eclipse was using. –user1212731 Feb 16 '12 at 19:32 3 Don't forget to mark an answer as correct. –xdhmoore Mar 20 '13 at 21:10 add a comment| 10 Answers 10 active oldest votes up vote 43 down vote Could it be that you're using a 32-bit jvm on that machine? share|improve this answer answered Feb 16 '12 at 0:46 Laurent 61749 2 Sorry for the stupid question, but how would I check that? And how can I use 64-bit? –user1212731 Feb 16 '12 at 0:48 2 Actually, I just tried java -d64 -version in the command line, and it came up with 64-bit server VM. –user1212731 Feb 16 '12 at 0:51 5 Apparently Eclipse was using the 32-bit version of JRE that I had installed previously, even though the 64-bit was the latest installation. I changed the settings in Preferences --> Installed JREs to solve this issue. Thank you very much for your answer! –user1212731 Feb 16 '12 at 19:28 3 in any case, shouldnt 32 bit be enough to address 4gb? –Thomas May 24 '13 at 12:36 5 It should be, but this solves my problem. When i try to start i got this: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Error: Could not create the Java Virtual Machine. Error: A fatal exception has error occurred during occurred. Program will exit. I can fix this problem by removing "-Xmx2048m" from DEFAULT_JVM_OPTS but i don't not know if this has side effects. Commit 8d90769 probably have also a bug. Install script should check first for "native" Java and later 32-bit Java on 64 bit system(Wow6432Node). If this will be helpful i can't come on IRC tomorrow but i am not a expert. piotr-szegda commented Sep 9, 2014 Probably best solution on 64 bit OS is giving hint to install 64 bit Java and use it. But this issue likely also applies 32 bit system. binwiederhier added a commit that referenced this issue Sep 10, 2014 binwiederhier #221 #222
