a minute: Sign up An error occurred while parsing EntityName. Line1, position 844 up vote 10 down vote favorite 5 I have got the following exception from the below code block. An error occurred while parsing EntityName. Line1, position 844. I was trying to parse s set of data retrieved from table to a data set. public DataSet BindMasterData(string xml) { an error occurred while parsing entityname line 1 position 48 DataSet ds = null; try { ds = new DataSet(); TextReader txtReader = new StringReader(xml); XmlReader reader = new XmlTextReader(txtReader); ds.ReadXml(reader); } catch (Exception ex) { return new DataSet(); } return ds; } I have figured out the reason for the exception, but I couldn't solve it. In this particular situation, the string(which is retrieved from DB) contains a special character (&). That causes exception. How I can solve it. Any help on this would be great. How can I remove the special characters so that the error doesn't show again ? The customer had https://gautambiztalkblog.com/2015/10/14/an-error-occurred-while-parsing-entityname-line1-position-581/ a variation enabled SharePoint site with multiple sites for different languages. He would export one of the language error occurred based site and sends it to the company that handles the translation. Once the export file (.cmp) was converted and returned, he used to import it back into the variation site for that specific language. This error occurred while used to work for all languages, but failed for one specific site. The import would fail with the following error: (You will see this error if debug & callstack are set to true in the web.config).
October 14, 2015October 14, 2015 ~ Gautam Recently I ran into this error for couple of times. Both the times this issue was due to the ‘&’ character in the address field of the XML message being processed in BizTalk. ‘&’ is basically an invalid XML character along with following and should be replaced / encoded before using them in XML. There is better / nicer way of achieving the same outcome by using SecurityElement.Escape method under System.Security namespace in .NET 4.5 and above. Here Escape method will replace “&” with “&”. This method basically replaces invalid XML characters in a string with their valid XML equivalent. So its always better to use this method while processing the address or other fields from XML message where the content of the field may contain invalid XML characters.
