bring an old machine out of mothballs. When I booted it, it said that there a duplicate name on the network. Logged on as local administrator and attempted to change the name. Could not. Have run into that problem before so took the machine out of the domain and put in the WORKGROUP workgroup. Rebooted. This usually allows me to change the name. Logged on as local an error occurred while validating the credentials. please try again admin. Attempted to change the computer name. Received the following error: The following error occurred validating the name "newmachinename". A general network error occurred. I suggest that you disable or uninstall the anti-virus temporary, and disable firewall software. Then try to change the workgroup again. If the issue persists, one of the network driver files may be corrupt. In our database I found a similar case that occurred on a Gateway computer either. Please launch Event Log, check the System log and find which file the error is related http://www.networksteve.com/windows/topic.php/Unable_to_change_Network_Workgroup_Name/?TopicId=22785&Posts=9 to. After you find related information and confirm which file causes this issue, please find another Windows Vista SP1 system (not from Gateway), copy the same file and replace the file on the problematic computer manually. Please note that we need to take the ownership of the folder before you replace the file on the problematic computer. Take ownership ==================== 1.In the "Start" menu, locate "Command Prompt". Right-click and choose "Run as Administrator". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. 2. Type the following commands, then press "Enter" to execute them one by one. Please note the space before the command and its parameter. takeown /f [full path of the file] cacls [full path of the file] /G administrators:F Hope it helps.
