Server 2014 SQL Server 2005 End of Support Newsletters Blog About Error occurred during the creation of the DTS Package Posted on January 18, 2006September 27, 2015 by WARDY IT Solutions This morning I received a call from a client who were receiving the error "Error occurred during the creation of the DTS Package" whenever they attempted to open the SQL Server 2000 DTS designer by either editing a package or attempting to create a new package. This error often occurs when there is an issue with the registration of the problem with DTSPkg.dll. The DTSPkg.dll can be found in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn directory. In order to resolve the issue the dll needs to be re-registered using Regsvr32.exe. ie. Regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\DTSPkg.dll This entry was posted in SQL Server. Bookmark the permalink. 2000 client tools installed won't edit DTS packages within SEM. The error "Error occurred during creation of a DTS package." appears first, and it is followed by "The selected package cannot be opened. The DTS Designer has been closed." The sqlstp.log file includes the following lines: 11:30:35 Begin Action PostSetupRegistry: 11:30:35 C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\SQLDEB~1 \sqldbreg.exe -RegServer 11:30:35 Process Exit Code: (-2147312566) Error loading type library/DLL. 11:30:35 End Action PostSetupRegistry I attempted to manually unregister, and then http://www.wardyit.com/blog/error-occurred-during-the-creation-of-the-dts-package/ re-register the following files, in this order: dtsffile.dll dtspkg.dll dtspump.dll axscphst.dll The unregistration attempt fails for dtspkg.dll, which leads me to believe that it wasn't registered to begin with. The re-registration attempt fails for both dtspkg.dll and dtspump.dll. All manual attempts were made with regsvr32.exe. I have also tried performing an uninstall of the client tools, then a http://www.verycomputer.com/156_1c383559696e8446_1.htm re-install, as well as an update to SQL Server 2000 SP2 on the client, none of which has solved the problem. The error from sqlstp.log mentioned above occurs at each install attempt. The corresponding .rll files appear to be in place, and comcat.dll version 5.0.2195.1 is present in C:\WINNT\system32\. Custtask.dll is registered. The server is SQL Server 2000 SP2 with the post-SP2 hotfix (8.00.608). Other client boxes with the 2000 client tools, both SP2 and RTM, are able to connect and edit DTS packages. The problem affects any user on the workstation in question. MDAC install log dasetup.log on the workstation reports a successful installation. Suggestions? The main culprit is Comcat.dll (winnt\system32). Version 4.71 is required for DTS to function correctly. For a quick fix copy Comcat.dll from your SQL 7 CD-ROM, and register it as described below. If this does not work then start working your way through the suggestions below. (Re-)Apply SP1 or SP2 (Re-)Install Internet Explorer 5 Copy Comcat.dll from the SQL 7 CD-ROM to \winnt\system32, replacing the existing version.
