Bykipper Jun 16, 2005 Hello, i've been at this for about 10 hours now. Googling, mucking around with cables, booting, resetting, blah blah blah. Please can anyone help me with this.... OK. So the last thing error occurred that happened before I went to bed last night was an automatic update from MS as I shut down the PC. Not much unusual there. Clean shutdown, all good. This morning, I turn on the PC (its a desktop) - as soon as it gets to the Windows XP Professional splash screen with the blue bar, the whole system just hard reboots itself. So i've made the assumption its hard disk related. I slaved the HDD onto a different PC and error occurred during doing so caused that PC not to be able to boot either, so I put it back where it was. I read up on some solutions using the recovery console booting from the XP setup CD, but if I try to DIR the volume all I get is "An error occured during directory enumeration". I can FIXMBR and FIXBOOT but neither has resolved the issue. I've read that a CHKDSK will do it, but because the volume can't be read, CHKDSK just hangs the whole system (unless it doesnt have any output, do you know?). I can't repair windows, I can't reinstall over the top without a reformat - and this is not an option at all. The PC in question is not backed up (my bad), and its got work on there, payment for which is the only thing thats going to allow me to eat! I got a floppy boot disk from ntfs.com which allows me to examine and read the volume and confirm everything on the disk itself is intact... but I can't move it anywhere - I have no CD burner, and because we're not in windows, i can't copy it over the network. This is absolutely driving me insane, does anyone know of a way I can sort out my PC? I absolutely hold microsoft responsible for this... not the first time a windows update has ballsed things up, it happened on my laptop befo
There were no files in the Windows/INF directory and although the computer would boot installing new hardware or updating the system was impossible. During my investigation, I used a Windows XP installation CD to boot to the recovery console. At the normal prompt I typed "dir" (without the quotes) and pressed Enter to show a directory listing. I was presented with an ominous message stating: "an error occurred during directory enumeration" and the computer was unable to show a directory listing. It appeared that the information was lost on the hard drive. Follow the information below to see how to possibly recover from this dreaded situation. Booting into the Recovery ConsoleYou'll need your Windows XP installation CD or have access to it through your boot menu. In this instance, we'll use an installation CD.Follow these steps to boot into the Recovery Console from a Windows XP Installation CD.1) Place your Windows XPin the first bootable CD-ROM drive2) Restart your computer and make sure your BIOS is set to boot from CD3) When you see the following command press the space bar."press any key to boot from cd..."4) Wait until you see the "Welcome to Setup" screen, and press R to start the Recovery Console5) Choose which Windows installation you wish to load (this is usually #1 unless you have a multi-boot system)6) Type the administrator password and Press Enter7) You should now be at the C:\Windows> prompt If you are experiencing this particular problem, typing DIR and pressing Enter on your keyboard will give you the dreaded message "an error occurred during directory enumeration".At the command prompt type the following command and press Enterchkdsk /p /rAllow chkdsk to run until complete, this may take a few minutes, but it may also take a few hours. Don't interrupt the process, just walk away and let the program check the disk and fix the problems it finds. Amazingly enough, doing just this step can fix many boot issues with Windows XPOnce the chkdsk program completes, type Exit to reboot Windows. In many instances, this simple procedure will allow Windows to boot correctly again. If Windows does indeed boot corr
