Back up your data. Then from a working machine get a diagnostic utility from the hard drive mftr. and do a thorough scan of the hard drive. Replace the drive if there are errors. Definitely you should back up your data before messing around with Fixmbr, etc. Then determine that the hardware is sound before going further with software solutions. There were no files in the Windows/INF directory and although the computer would boot installing new hardware or updating the system was impossible. During my investigation, I used a Windows XP installation CD to boot to the recovery console. At the normal prompt I typed "dir" (without the quotes) and pressed Enter to show a directory listing. I was presented with an ominous message stating: "an error occurred during directory enumeration" and the computer was unable to show a directory listing. It appeared that the information was lost on the hard drive. Follow the information below to see how to possibly recover from this dreaded situation. Don't interrupt the process, just walk away and let the program check the disk and fix the problems it finds. Amazingly enough, doing just this step can fix many boot issues with Windows XPOnce the chkdsk program completes, type Exit to reboot Windows. In many instances, this simple procedure will allow Windows to boot correctly again. If Windows does indeed boot correctly, don't tempt fate again...backup any important data now as a precaution.Written by Mark Hasting Printer Friendly Version
