I got it again today and after poking around, it appears to have been a file permission issue. At an error occurred while partitioning the disk mac least in this instance some symbolic links were missing write permission to the "group" and "other". Luckily it was safe for me to delete them. That got compression working again.Another solution is to copy the problematic folder/file. Seems that copying fixes permissions.
