There were no files in the Windows/INF directory and although the computer would boot installing new hardware or updating the system was impossible. During my investigation, I used a Windows XP installation CD to boot to the recovery console. At the normal prompt I typed "dir" (without the quotes) and pressed Enter to show a directory listing. I was presented with an ominous message stating: "an error occurred during directory enumeration" and the computer was unable to show a directory listing. It appeared that the information was lost on the hard drive. Follow the information below to see how to possibly recover from this dreaded situation. Booting into the Recovery ConsoleYou'll need your Windows XP installation CD or have access to it through your boot menu.
