Every visit to the Windows Store he was offered the Upgrade, but each attempt to upgraded ended in the error below: Sometimes this error will read "Something happened and the Windows 8.1 could’nt be installed. Please try again. Error code 0×80240031" Fortunately, this was a https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hc4NSiardOA relatively simple fix. First open up the Command Prompt as an Administrator: At the Command Prompt type the following commands one at a time: 'net stop wuauserv' hit enter 'net stop bits' hit enter Now browse to the C:\Windows\Software Distribution folder and delete all the files and folders inside. You may be told files are https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/ouc1too/2013/10/25/something-happened-and-the-install-of-windows-8-1-cant-be-completed-and-now-youre-annoyed/ in use, if so, restart your device, and run the commands above again, but this time make sure the Windows Store app isn't open. Now back to the Command Prompt and type the following commands one at a time: 'net start wuauserv' hit enter 'net start bits' hit enter Now open the Windows Store. If the files are in use, restart your device. After rebooting, run the commands above again. Your Windows Store App needs to be closed by the way, so do not start it. Now you will be able to delete the files from the mentioned Software Distribution folder. Now in the Command Prompt window, type the following commands one at a time, and hit Enter: net start wuauserv net start bits Advertisement ^ Now open the Windows Store. You should see something like this: Once you see it, try the upgrading process all over again. Once the download is complete, your machine may reboot and begin the update process. If all works well, you should see the screen messages that you saw when you first installed Windows 8 on your machine. Depending on your preference, you may be asked to sign in using your Microsoft account and select your color preferences again. This indicates, you have successfully installed Windows 8.1.
