installer fails with the information: Setup Wizard for Update Rollup 5 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 3 (KB2917508) ended prematurely because of an error. Your system has not been modified. To install this program at a later time, please run the installation again. The screen dump below also shows what error look like: The reason for the error and why the Update Rollup installer is “ended prematurely” is because the server has User Access Control (UAC) activated exchange 2010 service pack 3 rollup 9 on the server. For good reason, it is not recommended to disable the UAC. The error is also shown in the event log, as Event ID: 1024 and with error code 1603. How to Install the Update Rollup The recommended process for installing Update Rollups on the server, is using an elevated command prompt (Open a CMD with Run As Administrator) and make sure the Update Rollup is located on a local drive of the server and start the installer using: SYNTAX example: msiexec /update

which is Rollup 3 for Service pack 3 (RU3, SP3) and it fails as soon as it starts and the installer says it has rolled back and not applied https://www.msdigest.net/2014/03/setup-wizard-for-exchange-update-rollup-ended-prematurely/ any changes. this is the message in the event logs about it... "Product: Microsoft Exchange Server - Update 'Update Rollup 3 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 3 (KB2891587) 14.3.169.1' could not be installed. Error code 1603. Windows Installer can create logs to help troubleshoot issues with installing software packages. I am not sure where to go from here, i will next try installing this update from the domain administrator account tonight and also by running the update file form an administrative command prompt. I am not sure how to turn on the exchange setup logs , as the last logs i could find were from june 2013 when we probably did the last rollup update. Personally, I would run (maybe you have...) ExBPA (Best Practices Analyzer) and all the Test-* cmdlets and see if there are any existing problems. Long shot: disable antivirus during the upgrade.
