I had found a workaround, namely to call virtualenv with –no-setuptools argument and then install pip with python -m ensurepip, but, you know, ensurepip module had been added to python just recently, so it was a no-go for earlier version of python. But today I finally added an ipdb to virtualenv and was able to trace the problem – I must admit that was quite easy and I had to do that a lot earlier.I discovered that virtualenv has config file, located in ~/.virtualenv/virtualenv.ini, and, moreover, that file exited on my machine for some unknown reason, and it was not empty – it contained extra-search-dir option which was set to ~/Library/Python/2.7
