I bought an inexpensive internal PCI fax modem and installed it, which seemed to go without problem. Device Manager reports it is working properly, but when I use the Diagnostics to query the modem I get an error that the port the modem is attached to could not be opened because of a possible hardware conflict. Querying the modem, I get the following message: "The port that the modem is attacched could not be opened.This may be the result of hardware conflict." The error register reports: "Opening the modem device failed with error 000005aa" No conflict is visible, modem is attached to port 3 IRQ9, every attempt to change the COM port ends with a message indicating the port is already in used by some other application, no other application is running, unistalling and re-installing the modem and the bloothoth devices do not help, unistalling all ghost peripherals is unuseful.
