Check the SQL Server error log and the Windows event logs for information about possible related problems. The critical question as always is what was the last change before the error started occurring. Fortunately the DBA was willing to share this information. Usually nobody remembers if they did any changes at all :S The last change was that the SQL Server service account had been removed from the Local Admins group. BINGO! A permissions issue! A Process Monitor trace captured from the reproduction of the issue showed clear access denied events at these folders and registry keys: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\

July 2013 Janos-Berke SQL Server (0) While I am on vacation I saw a SQL Server which was not able to start. It reminded me to my last year vacation where I needed to fix a cashier machine with SQL Server Express Edition for a price of a pizza :-).This is not my rate anyway ;-). Symptom SQL Server cannot start and you see the following errors: Eventlog errors: failed with EventID: 17190 Description: Initializing the FallBack certificate failed with error code: 1, state: 20, error number: 0. EventID: 17182 Description: TDSSNIClient initialization failed with error 0x80092004, status code 0x80. Reason: Unable to initialize SSL support. Cannot find object or property. SQL Server Error log: Initializing the FallBack certificate failed with error code: 1, state: 20, error number: 0. Unable to initialize SSL encryption because a valid certificate could not be found, failed with error and it is not possible to create a self-signed certificate. TDSSNIClient initialization failed with error 0x80092004, status code 0x80. Reason: Unable to initialize SSL support. Cannot find object or property. Error: 17182, Severity: 16, State: 1. Looks interesting ;-) Solution SQL Server generates a self-signed certificate – if it is not available – during the startup process. It is saved in the service account application data folder – for example network service account: %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\S-1-5-xxxxx where xxxxx is specific to your environment. Somehow the folder lost its default permission: FULL CONTROL to the service account, in this case Network Service. I added FULL CONTROL to the service account and restarte the SQL Server service w/o any problem. I hope it helps to others as well and may get a pizza too ;-) Tags : Database Maintenance, English, Encryption, Internals, Manageability, MCM, Practice, Quickpost, Real World Experience, SQL Server, Sql Server 2005, Sql Server 2008, Sql Server 2012, Troubleshooting 5074a040-98a9-4687-aba4-2c201e0cf4de|1|5.0|27604f05-86ad-47ef-9e05-950bb762570c Related posts SQL Server alap információk Az alábbi script alap információkat gyűjt össze az SQL Server-ről.
