(forgot to put that in my original post -- sorry) terrydavis10-18-2012, 10:33 PMWell, I view this error as information exchange vss writer failed with error code 1295 since it is saying that it is retrying. Does the backup eventually finish after it retries? dtallerico10-19-2012, 01:32 PMSince installing Hot Fix ID 329 we have seen a 30% increase of https://support.software.dell.com/netvault-backup/kb/127037 VSS-based backup failures with this RETRYABLE message. Almost all of our VSS-based Exchannge 2010 backups are failing with this error. We posted a ticket to Support and engineering acknowledge the problem on Tuesday of this week. There is supposedly another HF coming. wwb10-19-2012, 02:04 PMCool - right now - I am in the process of removing the "VSS" option from those backup http://www.asigraforums.com/archive/index.php/t-1504.html sets that are getting this error. I for one do not like to have errors on any of my reports and then if the reports also go out to my customer -- then they are calling me "Why are my backups failing" - "What is happening". Then having to explain this several times per day -- I am a one man department monitoring 60 cusotmers - and one thing like this is a pain. Thanks for your repsonses slickshoes10-19-2012, 03:33 PMYeah I'm seeing crazy VSS errors across the board. I have also seen it fix problems to be fair. I'm having a different issue with customers with Exchange DAGs where it is backing up the Passive/Standby databases even though the box to only backup Active databases is checked.... that's causing fun disk space / licensing issues :) wwb10-19-2012, 03:53 PM--> slick -- if thats fun getting errors like that ---- you may need a visit from the guys in white coats :p I am thankful that my Exchange customers are small -- only have one customer who set up multiple storage groups wwb10-19-2012, 04:46 P
failed retryable state… ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ TIMMCMICMarch 11, 201247 0 0 0 In Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010 many customers are leveraging VSS based backups to retain and protect their Exchange data. By default Exchange https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/timmcmic/2012/03/11/exchange-and-vss-my-exchange-writer-is-in-a-failed-retryable-state/ provides two different VSS writers that share the same VSS writer ID but are loaded by two different services. The first is the Exchange Information Store VSS writer and the second is the Exchange Replication Service VSS writer. The Information Store writer allows for the backup of active / mounted databases and the replication service writer allows for the backup of passive databases (should a replicated database model be utilized). microsoft exchange You can see the writers by running the command VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS from a command prompt. Here is a sample put of a VSSAdmin List Writers from a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 server with Exchange 2010 SP1. Note how both writers share the same writer ID within the VSS framework. Writer name: ‘Microsoft Exchange Replica Writer' Writer Id: {76fe1ac4-15f7-4bcd-987e-8e1acb462fb7} Writer Instance Id: {17e8df11-a8a2-4ee3-a3fb-e552b7da2d83} State: [1] microsoft exchange writer Stable Last error: No error Writer name: ‘Microsoft Exchange Writer' Writer Id: {76fe1ac4-15f7-4bcd-987e-8e1acb462fb7} Writer Instance Id: {e0ad4b68-8938-4be5-9b88-4c74df2b2d65} State: [1] Stable Last error: No error In the course of protecting Exchange servers there maybe conditions that cause a backup job to fail. When an Exchange backup job fails the VSS framework aborts the backup and subsequently Exchange clears the backup in progress settings. When a failure is encountered either a single Exchange writer or both Exchange writers maybe left in a FAILED RETRYABLE state. We can utilize VSSAdmin List Writers again to query the writer status and see these results. Here is an example showing the Exchange Replication Service writer with a status 8 FAILED last error RETRYABLE. Writer name: ‘Microsoft Exchange Replica Writer' Writer Id: {76fe1ac4-15f7-4bcd-987e-8e1acb462fb7} Writer Instance Id: {17e8df11-a8a2-4ee3-a3fb-e552b7da2d83} State: [8] Failed Last error: Retryable error Writer name: ‘Microsoft Exchange Writer' Writer Id: {76fe1ac4-15f7-4bcd-987e-8e1acb462fb7} Writer Instance Id: {e0ad4b68-8938-4be5-9b88-4c74df2b2d65} State: [1] Stable Last error: No error Now the typical question that comes up at this point is how do I actually deal with an Exchange writer that consistently disallows backups. The answer – restart the service that the writer was associa
