Unable to change it! Windows Server > adsiedit domaindnszones Directory Services Question 0 Sign in to vote Well I was trying to do a adprep for readonly domain controllers. I ran
Fixfsmo Script
into problems and it wasn't able to complete:Adprep could not contact a replica for partition DC=DomainDnsZones(and ForestDnsZones),DC=adem,DC=arkansas,DC=gov.Error code: 0x0. Server extended error code: 0x0, Server error message: (null). So I started to investigate and look for answers..Somehow I ran into running this command:dsquery * cn=InfrastrucuremDC=DomainDnsZones,dc=adem,dc=arkansas,dc=gov -attr fSMORoleOwnerAnd kb 949257 it returns a CN=ADEM-DC which is a VERY old domain controller that hasn't existed in probably 4 years (before my time here). So I read about how you can change it with ADSIEdit. It is not able to change it because it says it cannot read it.So I do a netdom query fsmoSchema, Domain naming, PDC, RID pool all point to DC1 which is our current primary DC (correct).Infrastructure points to DC2 which is correct. So how do I go about fixing this problem? I am at a lost?!? How do I change the fSMOOwner if it won't let me?Ther exact error when trying to change it is:Operation failed. Error code: 0x20aeThe role owner attribute could not be read.000020AE: SvcErr: DSID-03152BF7, problem 5003 (WILL_NOT_PERFORM), data 0Any help would be appreciated! Thank you Monday, August 10

Use ADSIEdit to connect to DC=ForestDnsZones,DC=*,DC=com. Bring up CN=Infrastructure Properties dialog box. Locate fSMORoleOwner attribute. Set its value to CN=NTDS Settings,CN=DC3,CN=Servers,CN=Default-First-Site-Name,CN=S ites,CN=Co

Do you know how I can change it? I did run this vbscript from operation failed. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949257 and it still shows the old server. ( not sure if im supposed to wait a while after running script) May 9th, 2012 8:53pm You will need to seize the FMSO's role to a DC. Better be on the Win2003 because you want to demote the Win2008. Follow that KB to use operation failed. error ntdsutil for that: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255504 The global catalog error might be corrected after you will do that. I would try again before demoting it.MCP | MCTS 70-236: Exchange Server 2007, Configuring Free Windows Admin Tool Kit Click here and download it now May 9th, 2012 8:59pm Valcon54, Seems the old server reference still exists in your AD. Please go ahead and remove those referecne from AD by using NTDSUTIL command line tool (Process is called as metadata cleanup) Refer below link to understand this better http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216498 once this is done, wait for replication to happen and then run netdom query fsmo to check on what DC all 5 FSMO role exists. after you confirm this, you can go ahead with demotion of windwos server 2008 server and you can promote it back (you should make sure it does not hold any of the FSMO role before demotion.
