No reason given. I have a rule in Outlook that calls a VBA script for every received email. It works more often than not, but it frequently will give an error http://www.vbforums.com/showthread.php?792635-RESOLVED-Outlook-VBA-quot-The-operation-failed-quot-No-reason-given message that says "The operation failed." There is no other explanation. After that, the rule calling the script has been disabled, the text for the rule turns red and has "Error" in parentheses added to the end. This causes serious problems for me when I'm away from my computer and the rule is automatically disabled for all incoming messages. As a workaround, I've tried setting up a script to start based on an incoming email event rather than rules, but it was too complicated for me to understand. I've also tried "On Error Resume Next," so that it would skip the rule on those few occasions, but that made no difference. Is there any way to figure out why the rule failed so that I can make sure it doesn't happen? Last edited by adanedhel728; Apr 7th, 2015 at 04:11 PM. seemed to run smoothly, got it activated and all was well. Until I started playing around in Outlook and found a problem when I clicked on Manage http://www.networksteve.com/exchange/topic.php/Outlook_2016_Manage_Rules_&Alerts:_The_attempted_operation_faile/?TopicId=59475&Posts=3 Rules & Alerts. I get a pop up with the following message: "The attempted operation failed. An object could not be found." I am able to log into Outlook Web Access and manage rules from there. I saw on several other forums and posts to run in command prompt "outlook.exe /cleanrules" but even running this while opening command prompt as administrator, the operation failed problem remains. Has anybody else run into this? I am open to any other suggestions... I am wondering if there might be an ADSI edit required, but not savvy enough with it to know what to look for. October 13th, 2015 4:39pm Can you repro the issue in Outlook safe mode ("Outlook.exe/safe") ? If /cleanrules switch doesn't work, we may also try creating a new mail profile in Control Panel and then reconfigure your email account in the new mail profile to see if this issue continues. This methodis reported to have resolved the sameproblem for some users. For your convenience: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/829918 Please let me know the result. Regards, Steve Fan TechNet Community S October 14th, 2015 1:52am Recreating the mail profile solved the problem. I can't believe I didn't think of that... That is usually the first thing I think of when somebody in my organization comes to me with an email problem I haven't heard of. Thanks to both for the suggestions!
