Re: Acrobat read-only error message Bill@VT Nov 16, 2010 10:20 AM (in response to thorunn8) Network drives have always been a problem for Acrobat. A lot apparently depends on the specific network. Just save locally and then copy to the network. Like Show 0 Likes(0) Actions 2. This means that the file has been designated as "read-only", which means that you can read it but are not permitted to make any changes to it. There are several ways that this can occur, with different methods for removing the restriction based on read only how it came to be in the first place. Steps Method 1 Turning off "Protected View" 1 Open the protected file in Word. If you downloaded a Word file from online, it will start in Protected View when you open it. This prevents editing, and is designed to help prevent virus infections on your computer from infected files. If you are getting an error message claiming that you don't have permission to remove read only open the file, click here. 2 Click the .Enable Editing button. You can find this in the yellow bar at the top of your protected document. 3 Start editing the document. Usually this is all you need to do to start editing a file that you've downloaded. If you still can't edit the file, read on. Method 2 Changing the File's Properties 1 Open the folder containing the read-only file. Depending on where it was saved originally, this could be in your Documents folder, Downloads folder, desktop, or some other location. If the file is located on a CD or DVD, it will always be read-only until you copy it to your computer. 2 Right-click on the file you want to change. 3 Select "Properties" from the menu. 4 Uncheck the "Read-only" box. 5 Click the .Apply button. 6 Try editing the file. If you still can't edit it, read on. Method 3 Saving the File in Another Format 1 Open the read-only file in Word. If you can't toggle the read-only attribute off, you may be able to save the file as a copy and edit the copy. 2 Click File and select "Save As". 3 Change the name of the file so that a new copy is created with a slightly
noreason July 14, 2010 I'm not sure how widespread this problem is, but I've seen it a few times, and one of my work colleagues gets it regularly: You're happily working in a Word 2007 document, saving as you go, when all of a sudden you can't save as you get a message that the document is set to ‘read-only' You save and close a Word 2007 document, re-open it, work on it, try to save it again but get the ‘read-only' message. The workaround I've used to date has been to do a ‘save as' and save the document with a slightly different file name. However, after my colleague said that she's getting the message all the time on a specific document, it was time for me to go off to Google and check if anyone else gets this and how they solved it. Here are some possible solutions I found: Turn off Allow Background Saves. There may be a conflict with when you do a manual save and the automatic save (Microsoft Office button > Word Options > Advanced > Save subsection). Turn off AutoRecover (Microsoft Office button > Word Options > Save > Save AutoRecover information every xx minutes). Check the General Options settings for the document (Microsoft Office button > Save As > Tools drop-down [to the immediate left of the Save button] > General Options > clear the Read-only Recommended check box if it's checked -- no, I had NO idea this option existed either!). Click the individual screen shots below to see these steps in full size. Reboot your computer and immediately check your Temp and Templates folders for lurking temporary files not deleted properly (don't open any Office applications until after you've done this -- your Temp folder should be empty after a fresh reboot). Your Temp folder is located here: C:\Users\
