And for me, this issue wouldn't happen to allmy documents, but once it did happen to a particular document, it would keep happening to that document no matter whatI did. The word documents open in read only mode only wayI was able to get around the problem was to turn off the automatic backup file feature in Word 2010 while working in that document. Clickthe File tab of the ribbon and then click Options. Click Advanced at the left side of the dialog box. Scroll down to the Save section and make sure the Always Create Backup Copy check box is NOT selected. Optionally, also NOT select the Allow Background Saves check box. Click on OK. In addition, sometimes when you open a word file, a temporary copy is created. Closing thedocument should also close the temp file. Sometimes this does not happen and the temp file remains behind. If so, it also may cause this issue. Try toreboot or end process by clicking Alt+Ctrl+Delete to open task manager so that clear the temp file. Hope that helps. Hello I have a real annoyance! I Sync a number of files with SyncToy between my Desktop W7 Home x64 and my Netbook W7 Starter x32 with an external hard drive. Some files appear as READ ONLY on the top title bar when opening on my Netbook. I don't notice it until I'm going to read only save and I'll get the notification that I cannot save the file, only save as a new one. It appears to happen ramdomly, although any files created on the Netbook and saved on the external HD can be edited and saved with no problem, many files created on the Desktop appear as READ ONLY. This occurs with other file types such as Ini, jpg, txt and other non-Office docs. Any suggestions...? Reports: · in read only Posted 4 years ago Top Exlans Posts: 17 This post has been reported. Check the Security tab ;) and be sure the Read-Only unmarked in the files .. Reports: · Posted 4 years ago Top JayDivider Posts: 39 This post has been reported. No, the files themselves are not in read only mode...anything else I could do? Reports: · Posted 4 years ago Top JayDivider Posts: 39 This post has been reported. Got it!!! The drive's security settings were somehow changed. To change them back I right-clicked the drive, Properties\Security\Edit and selected all the Allow boxes. No more READ ONLY on files on the drive when opened on another PC! Reports: · Posted 4 years ago Top Exlans Posts: 17 This post has been reported. Good Job .. Xochitlahtol Microsoft Office 2010 - issue with opening files as "Read-Only" By jrogel November 21, 2012 Excell 2010 Office 2010 PC Protected View Read-Only problem This happened to me the other day when trying to open an older(-ish) Excel file created with Office 2003 in the new 2010 version of the software: I double clicked on the file and a message appeared telling me that the file will be opened in read-only mode and that whenever it becomes free then I will be able to edit it. The strange thing is that no one else had the file opened. If you have the same issue with your files, read on. There seems to be a new feature in the 2010 edition of MS Office called Protected View created to "enhance protection against mail attachments, files originated from the internet and located in unsafe locations". This sounds great, but the problem is that Protected View will remove support for legacy document formats, and causes these documents to be opened in read-only mode. A solution posted my Microsoft is: Run the Office 2010 application with the problem. Notice that this procedure has to be done individually with each of the applications in MS Office suite (great!). Click on the Office button on the upper left-hand corner and select "Options" In the "Options" dialogue box, select "Trust Center" (on the left) Click on "Trust Center Settings" (on the right) Select "Protected View" Disable any of all the protected view options by unticking the check boxes. Click OK when done. Another alternative is to re-save your legacy document. In order to do that do the following: Open the problematic legacy document Click File and select Save As In the dialogue box, on the lower left-hand corner there is a drop-down menu called "Tools", select "General Options" Make sure that the "Read-Only recommended" check box is unticked. Save the file and hope for the best… I hope this is useful to you.
