Time Machine Cannot Create Backup Folder
11 down vote favorite 1 I have upgraded recently to Mavericks, and am setting up Time Machine on this system for the first time (it wasn't set up with the earlier OS, Mountain Lion.) Time Machine successfully backs up once after I boot the laptop. However, every time it tries to back up again while the laptop is running (I don't normally perform a full shutdown and reboot very often!) it fails with the error message: "An error occurred while time machine can't create backup folder creating the backup folder." I would like to eject the drive and plug it in again to see if this helps, but clicking the Eject button in Finder shows this message: and I have not wanted to do a Force Eject. I have rebooted, and Time Machine successfully backed up once after that, only to fail again the next time it tried. I do sometimes close the laptop lid or put it to sleep with the disk still plugged in, and it is still there when it wakes. I searched the Console for Time Machine-related errors but could not see any. (The Console won't display system.log saying I don't have permissions, but running syslog -C in the Terminal and scanning the output doesn't show anything either.) How do I: Solve the issue, so it successfully create the backup folder Perhaps, see if it is Time Machine or another app that is preventing the disk eject? Details: An early 2011 Macbook Pro, which was running Mountain Lion for a week on a new internal hard drive, now Mavericks The drive is a 2TB Toshiba USB drive. I formatted it at as Mac OS X Journaled. Running Disk Utility and verifying the disk shows no errors. The drive has about 800GB free space. I am running from a normal (non-admin) user account. time-machine backup mavericks external-disk share|improve this question asked Nov 2 '13 at 18:43 David M

Time Machine is incredibly easy to use—and it’s officially supported by Apple. (It’s also https://joeontech.net/why-i-dont-rely-on-time-machine.html the best way to restore individual contacts and email messages in Contacts http://superuser.com/questions/14716/time-machine-unable-to-complete-backup-an-error-occurred-while-creating-the-ba and Mail, respectively.) Lots of people use Time Machine because it requires essentially no thought or preparation. You can plug in a properly formatted external drive, click one button, and get a full backup of your Mac, updated automatically every hour. I used to be a big Time Machine time machine fan, because anything that makes backups easier greatly increases the likelihood that people will use it. But not so much anymore. In fact, I still use Time Machine, but not exclusively. I don’t depend on it anymore, and I’d like to give just two recent examples to illustrate why. A couple of weeks ago, not long before my new book an error occurred was published, Time Machine displayed the following helpful error message on my Mac: “Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to ‘Backup Drive’. Unable to compete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder.” Huh. The Time Machine preference pane suggested that I try again later, and I did, with the same result. Since there was an error creating a folder, I guessed that the disk might have some errors, so I ran Disk Utility. Sure enough, there were errors, but Disk Utility couldn’t fix them. Neither could DiskWarrior. Or TechTool Pro. So I was left with no choice but to reformat the disk and start over from scratch. I still don’t know what caused the problem, but neither Time Machine nor any disk utility I tried could fix it—and the hardware itself was, as far as I could tell, just fine. When my backups become suddenly inaccessible for unknown reasons and I’m offered no solution but starting over, that sort of diminishes my faith in the software. Then yesterday, Morgen’s laptop, which backs up to a completely different destinati

An error occurred while creating the backup directory up vote 2 down vote favorite I recently started getting this error message in Time Machine: Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup directory. My configuration: Unibody Macbook Pro 15" (circa September 2008) & Western Digital Passport 500GB (USB HDD), OS X 10.5.7 (up-to-date). I couldn't get rid of this problem through unplugging/replugging my external HDD, and eventually rebooted the machine. The problem is gone for the time being but I'd like to find a better solution than "reboot and pray". osx mac time-machine share|improve this question asked Jul 28 '09 at 21:46 pix0r 3582512 I've had the same issue as well and a bit of tinkering like you've said seems to "fix" it for a while. I'd like to know the cause of too. +1 for your question. –Pauk Jul 28 '09 at 21:52 2 What shows up in Console? Specifically anything from backupd or is that the error from Console (/var/log/system.log in this case)? –Chealion Jul 28 '09 at 22:52 I'm sure there's more details in Console? –Arjan Aug 7 '09 at 16:57 add a comment| 4 Answers 4 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote accepted What is in your Console log, if you filter for "Backupd".
