Com.apple.backupd Backup Failed With Error 18

from the Adobe Community Summit I knew there were a couple of things I had to do. Getting a bit of rest and hanging out with my wife and full reset of time machine son were at the very top of the list. Closer to the bottom was time machine backup fails repeatedly plugging my MBP into a power brick in order to backup my computer to my Time Capsule. Little did I know

it wasn't going to be as easy as usual. After plugging in and initiating the backup, Time Machine took over 20 minutes to prepare the data - it simply displayed "Preparing data" for what seemed like

ages. Finally, it finished the prepare data phase and displayed how much data it was backing up, about 5.3 GB. I'm simply amazed that one weeks worth of work could generate 5.3 GB of changed data. Realizing it was going to take Time Machine quite a while to copy 5.3 GB wirelessly to the Time Capsule I shut the MBP's screen about 80% of the way and decided to return to time machine troubleshooting the living room to do other things.A few hours later I came back to my MBP to see the following message:First, many thanks to Apple for giving me a useful error message I could do something about. Pfff. I tried several things to get Time Machine working again including rebooting, reconnecting to the Time Capsule, and simply restarting the backup process. All failed with the same error message. After hitting up Google for answers (Google always seems to have answers you know) I found a few posts on the MacCast forums that seemed promising. A user by the name of "karinlord" deserves credit for the right set of steps to mitigate this problem.I believe my problem started when my computer decided to sleep in the middle of the backup process. I am unsure if this occurred because of my systems preferences or whether I actually shut the computer lid enough to force it to sleep. Regardless, Time Machine seems to freak out if it gets interrupted during the backup process. When this happens several files and folders are left on your backup volume that deter any subsequent backups. To get Time Machine going again, you need to remove the errant files with the following steps:Ensure your backup device is turned

Added by Kevin Hanson over 2 years ago. Updated about 1 year ago. Status:Cannot reproduceStart date:04/14/2014Priority:Nice to haveDue date:Assignee:Josh Paetzel% Done:0%Category:AFPTarget version:9.3-RELEASE Seen in:9.2.1.3-RELEASE Hardware Configuration: ChangeLog Entry: Description I got this error the other day, and it wouldn't let me resume backing up. http://www.aaronwest.net/blog/index.cfm/2008/5/18/A-Fix-for-Time-Machines-Backup-Failure It only gave me the option to create a new Time Machine backup. I thought it might be a one-time issue so I had it create a new fresh backup, deleting the old one. I came back from work today (4:55PM), and I see that now it won't back up, and it's giving me issues. However, my first backup actually finished up this morning, and it https://bugs.pcbsd.org/issues/4808 looks like it has had some recent successful backups before I got home, as the last success was at 3:18PM. I'm pasting the relevant logs below. As it wouldn't let me manually initiate a backup, I went to my Time Machine preferences and clicked "Remove Disk" for the share I had on my FreeNAS box. I then re-added the same disk, using the same user / pass / encryption key I had before. It found the old backup, and it gave me the option to resume my backup. I chose "Use Existing Backup" and then the backup completed successfully. In terms of the logs below, I put a manual break in there between when I removed / re-added the disk. Let me know if there's any more info I can submit to help resolve this bug. I know AFP / TIme Machine is always a pesky issue. Would love to help make it less pesky!! -Kevin 4/14/14 3:15:47.081 PM com.apple.backupd21796: Starting automatic backup4/14/14 3:15:47.082 PM com.apple.backupd21796: Attempting to mount network destination URL: afp://kevinmacbookpro@Hanson-NAS._afpovertcp._tcp.local/Time%20Machine4/14/14 3:15:52.417 PM com.apple.backupd21796: Mounted network destination at mount point: /Volumes/Time Machine using URL: afp://kevinmacbookpro@Hanson-NAS._afpovertcp._tcp.local/Time%20Machine4/14/14 3:17:08.000 PM kernel0: hfs: mounted Time Machine Backups on device disk6s24/14/1

It works manually, but not automatically. It also works first thing in the morning when I plug the external drive into my laptop. I have basically gutted the Time Machine config com.apple.backupd backup failed files, launchdaemon files with no luck. I've even reformatted my TM drive. So far, no matter what I do, TM just never fires on the hour. The interface shows when the last backup occurred as well as when the next one is set to happen. When the time comes, TM never backs up but the "next backup" time is moved up one hour as expected. I have no errors in console. Is anyone else seeing this and if so, did you get it fixed?
