The server machine is an https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5396309?tstart=0 iMac with a Drobo attached via USB. I use the Server Time Machine service to create a backup server on the network, using the Drobo as the storage device for backups. I am currently backing-up two Macbooks to this Time Machine Server. Some backups will succeed but every other day or so, I will get an error on both laptops that the backup failed with the following reason: The backup on Server is already in use. I have only been able to clear this problem by restarting the http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/117368/the-backup-on-server-is-already-in-use server. If you land here and do not use MacOS Server, but a Synology DiskStation, do the following: Login to your DiskStation as root Open the main menu start the resource monitor switch to connected users select the blocked user and press disconnect share|improve this answer answered Jul 16 '14 at 14:31 mana 25328 I didn't find the above answer until after I fixed the problem, but on Synology DSM 5.1, I found that disabling and re-enabling the AFP service also makes the error go away. –Scott Dudley Apr 1 '15 at 12:17 I used this solution on a Synology DSM 5.1 - Thanks mana! –callisto Apr 14 '15 at 10:41 The above answer didn't fix my problem, the only connected user it showed was me logged in to the admin page. However, @ScottDudley's suggestion worked great, thanks Scott! –blm Mar 26 at 18:29 add a comment| up vote 7 down vote I have got this problem since I got my OS X Server, and still do get this error. Whenever my router disconnects, it causes this until I fix it. However, instead of restarting the server, there's a workaround: Open Server.
10.5: Repair a Time Machine 'Error 11' problem May 19, '09 07:30:00AM • Contributed by: leichter One of the more distressing Time Machine errors is Error http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20090515063602219 11. This is a "sticky" error; once it occurs, Time Machine will http://superuser.com/questions/1004981/error-preparing-the-time-machine-backup-disk hit it every time it runs. All you'll see in the standard Time Machine interface is that Time Machine keeps failing. You need to check the system logs to see the Error 11. The underlying cause of Error 11 appears to be some other error that caused an time machine earlier Time Machine run to terminate without cleaning up after itself. This leaves behind a partial file that indicates to Time Machine that another copy of Time Machine is already producing a backup, so it just stops. Colin Charles worked out the basic problem and solution, but his description only seems to apply to locally-attached disks. For network-mounted disks, where you've time machine lion got an additional level of sparsebundle in the way, things are a bit more complicated. Read on for the solution...Here are the steps needed to recover from the problem: Stop Time Machine in the System Preferences panel. Mount the remote disk for read/write access. Open Terminal and run the following command: sudo -s. Enter your admin password when prompted. This will create a root shell for the remaining Terminal commands (even though not all commands need root privileges). Enter these commands: $ cd /Volumes $ ls You should see your remote-mounted disk here. For simplicity, let's say it appears as Backup. Type ls -ls Backup. You should see a .sparsebundle file with a name based on your machine's name and hex MAC address. I'm not sure exactly how these names are constructed, but for simplicity's sake, I'll pretend the name is mymachine.sparsebundle. Check that root has both read and write access to this file. If not, you probably mounted the disk with read-only access. Type hdiutil attach Backup/mymachine.sparsebundle/ -noverify -noautofsck -readwrite. This command, which must be typed on a singl

I keep this disk (BU2) at another location and do a backup when I'm there. The last backup was from before the upgrade to El Capitan. At home I have another backup disk (BU1), which took a very long time to complete after this backup. BU2 had to backup 130GB. After several hours only 30GB was done. It could have been only 30MB, I'm not sure anymore. I tried a second time, but no change. I took the disk home and erased it, made a new partition, did a check. This all seemed fine. Then I linked the disk to Time Machine, checking the encryption option. I enter the password, and after clicking OK I get this message: There was an error preparing the Time Machine backup disk BU2. Some information was unavailable during an internal lookup. I tried this several times. Is this a problem with Time Machine, or is this disk dying? How can I do a thorough check? Disk Utitily is not what it was anymore. What is the best way to check it? osx hard-drive time-machine disk-utility share|improve this question asked Nov 24 '15 at 20:06 SPRBRN 2,51133054 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote In Disk Utility you see a master partition and when you encrypt the disk a child partition is used. Deleting en recreating this child partition didn't work, and the problem kept popping up. Erasing the master partition did the trick. So it appears that the master partition had a problem, which caused Time Machine not to work properly. After erasing the master partition, creating an encrypted child partition, Time Machine worked and I could create a new backup. share|improve this answer answered Nov 28 '15 at 16:20 SPRBRN 2,51133054 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Post a
