Backup failed with error: 11 Posted on 13/8/2008,
Time Machine Stopped Backing Up
12:11 am, by Colin Charles, under General. Got time machine stopping backup stuck the dreaded "Backup failed with error: 11" with Time Machine. Actually, I only time machine not backing up hourly got the dreaded message from the Console - the application itself, just kept failing silently with no suggestions (Apple, this is https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3296771?start=0&tstart=0 your cue to make Time Machine a little more useful). Nothing in Apple's knowledgebase. Nothing seemingly useful come up in a Google search (i.e. something conclusive) Solution? Delete:

It'll ask for your password, and be gone http://www.bytebot.net/blog/archives/2008/08/13/fixing-time-machine-backup-failed-with-error-11 with the file. Now the backups should start working again. An example of what the Console showed:

It'll get better. Backup failed with error: 11 Categories Configuration Tags Diskutil Time Machine Mac OS Thank you apple for this informative error message. What happens is that my backup hangs after time machine approx 10 GB, which sucks a bit since I have lots of more data that needs to be backed up regularly :) So I've spent a few days searching for related information regarding howto's and workarounds solving this error and the most common solutions where Fix your disk permissions and reboot. This one didn't help me at all sudo diskutil repairPermissions / Rename your computer, if your computer name contains time machine not bad characters that is. Well, my computer name "mini" should have passed and renaming it to "tvdator" wasn't the solution either Repartition and format the time machine backup drive, make sure to use GUID Partition Table. This didn't solve my problem either Disable spotlight indexing of the time machine drive. Still no. My setup was actually a bit more advanced than a usual desktop system. I have a Leopard Server 10.5.something that needs to be backed up since I'm moving all functionality to another Leopard server. This includes the iCal Server, DNS, Mail Server, Open Directory etc. The basics are still the same though. Figuring it out Well, i made some deep diving in the system.log file and found error messages like this Aug 7 13:47:55 herlitz /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[3524]: Error: (-36) SrcErr:NO Copying /System/Library/Frameworks/Python. framework/Versions/2.5/Extras/lib/python/PyObjC/objc/test/ test_methods2.py to /Volumes/Backup of mini/Backups.backupdb/ tvdator/2009-08-07-113449.inProgress/88342F77-7636-4A95-B6C1- B42767AC0954/mini/System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/ Versions/2.5/Extras/lib/python/PyObjC/objc/test Ta' Well, I just disabled the backing up of the entire /System/ folder since I really won't need any data from there anyway. If you however do need data the data in this folder begin with disabling all subfolders of /System/Library/ (like Automator, BridgeSupport, Caches etc), and I mean ALL backup your disk and then... recursively remove one folder at a time and backup your machine
from the Adobe Community Summit I knew there were a couple of things I had to do. Getting a bit of rest and hanging out with my wife and son were at the very top of the list. Closer to the bottom was plugging my MBP into a power brick in order to backup my computer to my Time Capsule. Little did I know it wasn't going to be as easy as usual. After plugging in and initiating the backup, Time Machine took over 20 minutes to prepare the data - it simply displayed "Preparing data" for what seemed like ages. Finally, it finished the prepare data phase and displayed how much data it was backing up, about 5.3 GB. I'm simply amazed that one weeks worth of work could generate 5.3 GB of changed data. Realizing it was going to take Time Machine quite a while to copy 5.3 GB wirelessly to the Time Capsule I shut the MBP's screen about 80% of the way and decided to return to the living room to do other things.A few hours later I came back to my MBP to see the following message:First, many thanks to Apple for giving me a useful error message I could do something about. Pfff. I tried several things to get Time Machine working again including rebooting, reconnecting to the Time Capsule, and simply restarting the backup process. All failed with the same error message. After hitting up Google for answers (Google always seems to have answers you know) I found a few posts on the MacCast forums that seemed promising. A user by the name of "karinlord" deserves credit for the right set of steps to mitigate this problem.I believe my problem started when my computer decided to sleep in the middle of the backup process. I am unsure if this occurred because of my systems preferences or whether I actually shut the computer lid enough to force it to sleep. Regardless, Time Machine seems to freak out if it gets interrupted during the backup process. When this happens several files and folders are left on your backup volume that deter any subsequent backups. To get Time Machine going again, you need to remove the errant files with the following steps:Ensure your backup device is turned on and connected to your computer (wirelessly or wired, it doesn't matter)Turn off Time Machine using the big button in Time Machine preferences. NOTE: I did not execute this step and was still
